I never quite understood the animosity against those lines. IMO they were quite good.

For me, it's like background noise. When you read the Player's Handbook, it doesn't bother you much... And then you switch to another D&D book, like the Psionics Handbook, and you feel "hey, it's much comfier like this!"

You don't feel it annoying you, but once it stops, you appreciate the difference.

Well, that's what it does for me, at least.

So it's exactly the same book, but with a bland grayish cover (real or pseudo leather?), for 75$.

On the positive side, it looks like Guardians of Order's "Deluxe Limited Edition" version of their A Game of Thrones license is the only book I will be paying stupid money for this year.
