Leaving Indy for 2006?

Orlando....... please. Then I could drive there. They had Megacon, a boat show and a karate tournement going at the same time one year. The convension center is HUGE.

I found this on the gen con site .... http://www.gencon.com/displayindy.aspx?file=indy-future

There is at least some confirmation that a move starting 2007 is being considered - it sounds more like a threat, not to say it won't happen.

Future Gen Cons

Our hope is to continue to make Indianapolis Gen Con's home for many years to come. The officials from Indianapolis are working with their legislature to secure funding to expand the Indiana Convention Center which is great news for Gen Con. Gen Con is continuing to grow every year, therefore we need additional space for both exhibitors and attendees to have the Best Four Days in Gaming!

Indianapolis is indeed a fantastic city and we do not want to move, but it is always important to explore all options. It is our number one goal to produce the best Gen Con show year after year.

See you at the Best Four Days in Gaming! August 18-21, 2005 and August 10-13, 2006 in Indianapolis.

Perhaps Chicago?

i for one wouldn't complain. :D

as far as moving it to another city, i would have to seriously think twice about going to gencon if i had to fly to get there.

I would certainly hope this rumor turns out to be just that. A rumor. Indianapolis seems like a great place for the con. Lots of hotels in walking distance and close enough to allow a lot of people to drive there (I know there are plenty of people that fly). I know if I have to fly to the Con the chances of me going begin to slim down. It just starts to cost a lot more if I have to fly there.

More likely that is the total attendance for each day combined. Average it out, and you get a little over 20,000 (I have heard elsewhere that attendance was closer to 24k, so this does pan out about right).

Yep, it is turnstile not impressions so 20K people showing up all 4 days will almost get you there.

Well, it'd be convenient for me, but...

There's only two convention centers in the Chicago area of any size: McCormick Place and the Rosemont Convention Center.

Rosemont's not nearly big enough (it's gotta be smaller than even the old Mecca in Milwaukee). McCormick Place would be certainly big enough (it hosts the Auto Show, for crying out loud), but I believe it'd be a lot more expensive to rent than Indy, and there aren't a lot of hotels nearby. Most people who attend conventions at McCormick stay in downtown hotels, and take shuttle buses to the convention.

Exactly; see Devilbat's quote above from the GenCon board. Unique visitors is estimated at 25K or so. If you bought a 4-day pass (as most did), you're automatically counted as 4 "turnstiles".

Well,

This is second hand but from a pretty reliable source. Still, take it with a grain of salt.

From what I heard the powers that be in Indy were trying to raise thier fees. Old Peter countered by telling them that that was OK as he wasn't certain Indy could handle the convention and that he'd look elsewhere. When the powers that be found out he actually WAS looking elsewhere they cut the rates they were charging and basically begged GenCon LLC not to leave.

What we're seeing is just the backwash from corporate wheeling and dealing. Don't put too much stock in it.

Jack

P.S. I too would like to see a Gencon North held in Toronto. I know we certainly have the capacity compared to tiny little Indianapolis I suspect that cross border requirements would be too large a challenge. Still it would be great. :)

Even though it's double hearsay, that is one sweet negotiation technique.
