LEB Discussion Thread '10 Pt 2

For all I love the setting, I haven't read a scrap of Eberron fiction. Likely due to my aversion for the canonicity of FR fiction, even though I know Eberron fiction does not abuse the setting so.

Mythra's summons absorbed a total of three hits in that last adventure! (four if you count the miss). That is about six and a half PC deaths in the standard renau1g difficulty encounter! ;)

Yeah, MM3 damage really threw me for a loop. I've run 2 n+4 (although both were just over the high n+3 xp amounts) encounter since and one wiped 4/6 of the party (in Chef's Request) and the one with Mythra was a nail biter right to the end.

Whereas mine, over in L4W, took one hit to kill.
The magma beast was one-shotted (it may have been missed once) but the Dretch fared a little better. The biggest disappointment was when the iron cohort was killed in one hit by a close burst attack (and Mythra got hit!). I think that is summon's biggest weakness, AOEs.

I just wanted to throw in that your Summon Giant Toad was cracking me up each round. The monocle, having his tongue stuck to a tree, and eating flies mid-battle were well-needed sources of comic-relief throughout the encounter :D

Alright, so I'm on the fence between playing a House Vadalis something-or-another with a handful of animals running around with him, or a Dark Lantern.

I didn't play enough 3.5 to actually remember where +5 BAB would stick a rogue as far as levels go. Is a level 4 PC something that could reasonably pull off being a Dark Lantern?

Is a PC with a handful of companions even going to be a boon to a PbP party? The more I think about it, the more I think the answer is no. Sticking Twin-Strike on any Ranger, hybrid or otherwise, generally makes for a passable striker.

TheWalrus, jbear; you two are the closest to my level. If an adventure starts up, I'll likely be running with you guys. As far as fluff goes, do either of these sound more appealing than the other?

Everyone else, do we already have a Dark Lantern running around being all... Dark Lantern-y? Would the Vadalis something-or-another work out alright? Will a DM track me down and murder me for having 3 or 4 followers?

It takes seven levels of rogue to get a BAB of +5. I don't know what a Dark Lantern is, so I can't help with the second question.

So... if you have Twin-Strike, doesn't that mean you will be a boon?

I don't mind PCs with followers, provided that it is very easy for me to find the defenses of said followers.

Dark Lanterns are Breland's super spys. There was a PrC in 3.5 for them. The only real pre-req was a +5 BAB. The description of the PrC says that people can be Dark Lanterns w/o having the PrC, but not vice versa.

I was working on fleshing out a Dark Lantern theme, but the character seems close enough to Din that I think I'll shelve it for a bit. It's very much what I was aiming for with Din later on, though I didn't know they'd existed at the time.

I'll work on fleshing out the Vadalis kid.
