Legends and Lore - Player vs. Character Poll Thread

When you're exploring the environment in a D&D game, which method do you prefer?

I like puzzle games. I regard (old) D&D as one at least as much as it's a tactical wargame -- although a good scenario mixes opportunities for both of those with opportunities to talk with NPCs and just to fool around with stuff and explore a fantastic world.

"Searching long hallways inch by inch" is something I have never seen in about three and a half decades of play. What would be the point? It's sure not what I would call a puzzle game!

I like to resolve things within the rules of the game. Long discussions about if it's realistic or not that I see something don't appeal me.
So OR I see the things automatically (I look under the bed. Oh, look, some dust and a chest in plain view, no roll required), OR I need to check first, explain results of the check later (If I rolled high, maybe I used a torch to enlighten a dark corner).
