If I would ever have to design a new Magic Missle spell, it would look like:

At-Will * Arcane, Evocation, Force, Implement
Standard Action**********Ranged 20
Target: one creature
Effect: 1d4 + Int Mod damage
L11: 1d6 + Int Mod damage
L21: 1d10 + Int Mod damage
Special: You can use this power as a ranged basic attack.

That looks pretty good, WD! I think I might change it from 1d6+IntMod at L11 to 1d8+IntMod, though.

The reason it's a flat 2 versus 1d4 (which typically has the same net outcome) is that there are many effects that add to a die roll, which wouldn't affect MM. Not that I care, I think it could use some beefing up vs the one in the Essentials books. My mage Ashir has it and he will likely never use it (hasn't yet and he's 8th level).

It wasn't 1d4, it was 1d4+1, which was one point shy of the maximum damage of a real, pointy-type arrow, but had a higher average than 1d6. Of course, back in the old days, you didn't add your Dex bonus to missile damage, either, and had to have a specially made bow in order to get to add your Str bonus to damage done by arrows.

I see. Well my PH1 lists magic missile damage as 2D4+INT bonus.
