Don't look now, (DeWar, I know you're already hip to this) but HolyMan is back around, at least somewhat:

He hasn't asked to resume playing Simeon, I don't know whether he will, and I'm not sure that I would allow him to do so, but, there it is -- he's back on ENWorld. Okay, I am now sure that Simeon won't be joining the party of wizards at their present location, even if he is still alive and wandering the Underdark somewhere.

Actually, I think it was a Rod of Smiting and a Staff of Striking. The RoS was the cleric version of the Staff of Striking.

great thing to attack golums

addm: strangely enough, I don't see either of them in 3.5 or pathfinder.

I saw nothing on the rod or staff that would comfort the flesh golum in either of those links

I think Rod of Smiting was a 1E AD&D thing.

The 1E AD&D DMG says about it:

"Rod of Smiting: This rod is a +3 magic weapon which inflicts 4-11 (d8 + 3)
hit points of damage. Against golems the rod does 8-22 (2d8 + 6) hit
points of damage, any score of 20 or better completely destroys the
monster, but any hit upon a golem drains 1 charge. The rod does normal
damage (4-11 ) versus creatures of the outer planes such as demons,
devils, and night hags. Any score of 20 or better draws off 1 charge and
causes triple damage: (d8 + 3) X 3. The rod cannot be recharged."

I actually never knew that such an item would bust up a golem that way! Thanks, Scotley and DeWar, for cluing me in about this! A Rod of Smiting is usable only by a Cleric or a Fighter.

We could use the mongrel right about now. That Golem is fearsome. I'm a little worried about this fight. Oh well. Off we go.
