??

I think this is Gary's problem. He doesn't understand what a game actually is. Laws, i.e. rules, are the essence of a game.

-EDITED- Huh? Its like saying Tolkien knows nothing of elves and hobbits. Show some respect.

EVERY edition including the red basic sets of D&D mentioned the rules are only guidelines.

Including 3rd edition.

(Waaaayyy off topic here. I'm done posting about this stuff, it gets rather old rather quick.)

Let's not insult folks, everyone. Please reread your post before you click "send." :)

Personally, I agree with Gary that consistancy - rather than slavishly following the written rule - is what's important, so long as the players understand what is changed. No one is going to yell at you for changing a system's magic item creation rules. You don't want to have that sprung on a player as a surprise, though, and you don't want to use separate systems for both your buddy and your girlfriend. So long as a rule system remains consistent, that's what house rules are all about.

Incidentally, I didn't ask to stop the discussion, I asked for the disussion to stop ON THIS THREAD. There's a difference.

Debate of the differences in game systems is not a bad thing; but insulting another's opinions or character IS against the rules, as is railroading a thread off topic.
