Okay, folks. Help me out.

Early 80s. Sci-fi. Animated. May have been released in 3-D; my memory's fuzzy on that point.

Main character is a young man from an enslaved people. They live below-ground, and believe that "up is hell." He eventually escapes, makes friends, comes back to free his people, yadda-yadda.

He carries a sword handle with no blade, but is still able to cut things with it.

And I remember absolutely nothing else about it, except that there was a robot or android at some point.

Anyone?

I don't suppose you've watched it recently, have you? I'm trying to figure out if my fondness for it is based purely on childhood nostalgia, or if it was actually a decent flick.

I haven't seen it since I was very young. From what I remember, it was pretty neat. However, that was a long time ago ....

I do remember Orin's escape to the surface being kind of cool. He gets attacked by albino leeches and decomposing cyborgs (called "mandroids").

When I saw it in the theater, it was all in 3-D. Seeing the mandroid leader's rotting face and pulsing internal organs in their clear casing scared me pretty good.

I think Bakshi did the animation, or someone who was heavily inspired by him ....

The funny thing is that this film was a major box office hit, then it simply disappeared ... until this summer.

That would be... because it wasn't anything like a major box office hit. It only grossed $3.3 million worldwide; only $1.6 domestically. And it was only in theaters for less than three weeks.

That's childhood for you; I guess I remembered it wrong. It seemed cool to me at the time. There might have been a big ad campaign, perhaps?

I'm really into movies, and I've never heard of that film until this thread.

I remember my dad taking me to see that movie. The sword had no blade but he did stab it through a person and blood is running down the "blade", you can see the outline.

Also didn't the ship have engines that can swivel like Serenity's? I think I remember them flying forwards and swivling the engines around to go backwards really fast or something like that.
