Let's talk about money.

I don't want RAW answers, I want to know what oyu would do in your campaign-

Please state the values for the following items:

1. An Oscar sized statue, solid gold.

2. Diamonds the size of a ping-pong ball, a tennisball and a soccer ball.\

3. An 8X15 tapestry of imported thread that depicts a local legend of a dragon slaying.

4. A mundane dagger that belonged to a notorious thieves guild dagger 60 years ago (Capones gun).

5. An albino horse.

6. A new door with iron banding for the inn my fighter, Ragder, owns.

7. To have a runner take a shoebox across town.

8. A ferry ride across the river. With a horse.

9. My portrait, cause I am pretty.

10. A live pig. For setting off traps.

1) 90 gold.
2) Ping Pong ball - 70 gold; Tennis ball - 100 gold; soccer ball - 500 gold.
3) 900 gold.
4) 15 gold.
5) Worthless. Albino animals are alien and too different. Nobody wants one!
6) 7 gold.
7) 2 copper
8) 1 silver (Human), 4 copper (Horse)
9) 400 gold.
10) 8 copper.

1. Compare its weight, say, a few pounds, to the weight of a gold piece, and add for craftsmanship.

2. Bling! Thousands of gold, at least. And dealers would only be found in big cities.

3. Inches or feet? Several hundred or several thousand. For exact numbers I'd look in my 1e DMG and jigger up a modifier for imported thread (silk, IMO).

4. Whatever the collectors will bear--a lot considered I have few Thieves Guilds in my campaign.

5. Several thousand gold.

6. 20 gold or so I guess.

7. In what time limit? Several silver for a fast runner and ten or fifteen minutes journey.

8. A gold piece.

9. Depends on the artist, obviously.

10. Five coppers. For a small, aggreeable pig. For a "hog", thats a gold or so.

1. An Oscar sized statue, solid gold.

Figuring about 10 lbs of gold (50gp/lb x 10), about 500 gp. If it has the cultural importance of an Oscar, possibly double.

2. Diamonds the size of a ping-pong ball, a tennisball and a soccer ball.\

Well, only the first is likely to exist - I think the largest raw diamond ever found would be around the size of a ping-pong ball or mayb a little bigger. I'd say around 250,000 gp, figuring on around 750 gp/carat and 600 carats - then divided in half because it's a raw stone. Cutting that stone would lose a good chunk of its size, but get you more overall value.

3. An 8X15 tapestry of imported thread that depicts a local legend of a dragon slaying.

Highly dependent on quality - from 250 gp to 2,000 gp, I'd say.

4. A mundane dagger that belonged to a notorious thieves guild dagger 60 years ago (Capones gun).

To a collector who knows its origin, perhaps 500 gp. But the seller would need to be equally aware of its value - I'd start with an offer of 50 gp and go up depending on how much the seller knew.

5. An albino horse.

Perhaps double the cost of a regular horse - but only to the right buyer. Most wouldn't care.

6. A new door with iron banding for the inn my fighter, Ragder, owns.

Probably 75 gp, with an average lock. I'd go book value with this - or just use the MMS:WE building system, which doesn't break down into that level of granularity.

7. To have a runner take a shoebox across town.

4 cp.

8. A ferry ride across the river. With a horse.

1 sp.

9. My portrait, cause I am pretty.

It don't matter how pretty you are, it matters how good I am. 100 gp to 1,000 gp.

10. A live pig. For setting off traps.

Maybe 4 gp. I'd go with a book value if I could find one easily.

All right, out of whatever part of my mind spews stream-of-consciousness answers...

1) First thought was 135 gp, on reflection, maybe 250.
2) 5,000 gp, 100,000 gp, priceless.
3) 750 gp
4) if it can be authenticated, maybe 25 to 50 gp.
5) no idea, but I'd pay in white gold...
6) 5 to 20 gp depending upon size
7) 2-5 sp unless it involves danger or if the box or contents appear valuable, then more
8) 1 sp, 2 sp w/horse
9) 50 gp quoted by a relatively unknown but reasonably talented painter
10) this one I would refer to the PHB equipment list for. Off the top of my head, 3 gp.

Jeez, you folks are funny.

Actually, on the subject of diamonds - the largest raw diamond ever found was the Cullinan Diamond - 3,106 carats! It was cut into 9 major gems and 96 smaller brilliants. The two largest cut gems from it were 530 carats and 317 carats.

Mind you that 3,106 carat raw diamond only weighs around 21 ounces. Just over a pound.

Did you see how much the Cullinane and Cullinane II are worth? The Cullinane has about 2/3 the volume of a golf ball and it is priceless. Which means it would be put up for auction to see how many 10's or 100's of millions it would sell for. My bet, $40 Million.

Right. Way back in the 2e days, I went back to the gem tables in the DMG and redid the last few based on carat size and value per carat - so by my system the Star of Africa (the 530 carat diamond) would be worth about 400,000 gp - though anything that theoretically valuable is going to have a high fluctuation rate, since so few people can even consider buying it. My system had the standard "5,000 gp diamond" being about 6 2/3 carats - still very big in real world terms.

1- Prolly around 1000 gp
2- Ping-pong ball: 5000 gp; tennis ball: 10,000 gp; soccer ball: 1,000,000 gp. This assumes they're relatively flawless.
3- Anywhere from 10 gp - 1000 gp depending on quality and condition
4- Ooh, good one! Worth 2 gp to most people, maybe as much as 250 gp to a collector.
5- There are no horses in my campaign world. Well, very few, and not really found on the market anywhere. So the value of an albino horse imc is hard to pin down- I'd say about 2000 gp as a unique beast.
6- I'd have to look this one up; whatever the book says (Stronghold Builder's Guidebook, maybe?)
7- Prolly about 3 cp - 2 sp
8- Prolly about 2 sp for a horse, or 1 cp for a person.
9- Anywhere from 1 gp - 1000 gp depending on quality and artist.
10- I'd have to look in the phb; I'd assume about 1 sp?

Notice how many vary widely? ;)
