Is ther a fix in place for the rule that says spellcasters only loose one spell form the highest level???

I higher level caster who looses a few levels ends up with a lot of excess power still on board.

eg 12th level Sor drained down to say 2nd would still get acess to 3rd or possibly 4th level spells (no books at the moment)

Personaly I play the old way and use the table.

The loss of one spell slot from the highest level is for temporary negative levels. When you actually lose a level, you lose the spells that go with it.

Victim is correct. You are describing the effects of gaining a negative level, not the actual loss of a level. For each negative level, the character must make a saving throw 24 hours later or actually lose that level (unless he is restored first). See the DMG, page 75-76, Energy Drain, for the details.

Enervation etc. has a devistating effect on fighters as they loose everything.
less of an effect on a wizards

and much less of an effect on a spontanious caster (lots of spells/day at the high end).

Also seems strange to loose -1 on all saves

They don't lose feats or attacks per round. They just get negatives on their attacks.

Wizards have relatively few high level spells. Losing even one of them has a serious effect on their capabilities.

That's one of the few benefits of being a sorcerer. It's still pretty harsh.

It pretty much sucks no matter what class you are.

I strongly disagree. In our last game session the cleric lost the ability to cast Restoration due to level damage. He then managed to roll a 1 on one of his Fort saves against the level drain. (We use auto fail on 1 for most rolls.) So now our party faces a vast area of level draining undead without access to Restoration.

Level damage and drain can be very deadly against spellcasters.

Losing your memorized teleport or plane shift it pretty bad too. If you can't get your spells back on an outer plane then you are stuck with never getting your plane shift back.

1 is an auto-fail for saves (as well as attacks); it's in the rules. You are supposed to roll separately for each level if you have multiple negative levels.

Level loss is harsh by any account. My arcane archer got hit with some level loss and lost +2 arrows. Then we came up against a Vrock. Uh oh. Can't damage that, now. Some times you just need to suck it up and deal with it. It ... builds character.
