No training required. We typically give XP twice in the session, once when we break for dinner and then at session's end, and if you level when you get the XP, you can process the level then. Of course, it's preferred that you have an idea what you're going to take for your next level.
The DM in our al-Qadim game does require that, if you're going to take a PrC, you at least have access to the organization that passes out levels in that PrC. So, my warmage now has a correspondence course guide to the War Wizard of Corm...er, Huzuz.
