LG vs. N: Lawful Good Victorious!

Round 497: The second biggest bird you have ever seen, no, wait, it is the biggest bird you have ever seen, flies into the arena to 50N45E5Z. The gargantuan golden bird reaches out a gargantuan talon toward where it last saw the lion and claws viciously (rolled 23, 78% on miss chance) for 20 points of damage. The bird grabs on to the lion, holding it in its gargantuan talon (rolled 48 vs. 20 grapple check). Leo is first in round 498, and has 39 HP remaining.

Round 498: Leo finds it difficult to focus on the dimension door while being squeezed by the giant bird (rolled 19 Concentration check).
The bird lands at 50N45E. It squeezes Leo with the talon it is using to hold him (43 vs. 22 grapple) for 17, and bites (rolled 35-4=31 for grappling, claw misses because of invisibility) for 11. Leo is at 11 HP.

OOC: Not that it matters because once grappled and the dim door fails, Leo is toast, but can you combine grappling attempts with natural weapon attacks? A grapple attempt uses iterative BAB, but natural weapons specifically disallow that. I think the roc gets three grapple attempts (no miss chance, +37/+32/+27, 2d6+12 each) or three natural attacks (-4 atk and miss chance).

Leo otherwise claws his captor until he dies if he's not already dead after the above.

Either way, the LG crowds are disappointed at the luck of the bird in hitting Leo at the get-go and Leo's failed dim door attempt. They ignore the fact that Leo really never stood a chance anyway.

I agree with I2K, with the possible exception of rake attacks, which I have previously allowed to be combined with grapple checks.

OOC: I feel like the biggest idiot when it comes to grappling. It seems like every time I mess something up, but at least I mess up different things most of the time. Maybe I will finally learn how to handle grappling one day.

OOCA: OK. I misunderstood on page 156 of the PHB under Damage your opponent, where it says that in place of an attack you can make an opposed grapple check.

The roc would have tried three grapple attacks, succeeding on all three for an additional 37 points of damage instead of the bite for 11. Leo is dead in round 498. The roc is at full HP and at 50N45E.

First for Lawful Good in round 499 is a warden archon (Book of Exalted Deeds). Gansk, I will need an E-mail from you unless you want to take over the Celestial Arena for the next two Lawful Good combatants.

OOC: No big deal about the grappling; learning is one of the reasons why we are all here. :)

A large bear standing upright walks into the arena to 0N15E, ducking under the 80ft wingspan of the roc. The Warden has thick, white fur, ebony claws, and wears gem-studded full plate intricately carved in glowing sigils and runes of a holy nature. Sensing the roc's alignment as Neutral, expected obviously, the Warden merely grits his teeth in anticipation of a bloody battle. He casts true strike, ready to go to battle. (See below for relevant stats if Gansk hasn't responded yet. I'll post attack bonuses as they are needed.)

[sblock]
AC 30 (touch 9, light fortification); Grapple +20; Size Large; Reach 10; DR 10/evil

He has Aura of Menace, Will save DC 13 (though I think this is an error and should be 17)
[/sblock]

OOC: Thanks.

Round 499: The roc flies over to 15N30E and lands, reaching out a talon and swiping the Warden (rolled 37) for 19-10=9 points of damage. The bird is not cowed (rolled 21 Will save). The bird holds on to the Warden (rolled 54 vs. 28 grapple check) and pulls it into its space. The Warden has (maximum - 9) HP remaining.

Oops, forgot hit points. :)

The warden throws almost everything into power attack and attacks the roc with his natural weapons.

[sblock]
HP 60-9=51
Full Atk 2 claws +15 melee (1d8+8) and bite +10 melee (2d6+4)

His Power Attack is at +5 (BAB of +8), so coupled with his grapple penalty and true strike, he gets:
Full Atk claw +26 melee (1d8+13) and claw +6 melee (1d8+13) and bite +1 melee (2d6+9)
If he hits with two claws, he Rends for 2d8+12 (does Power Attack apply?), no attack roll necessary
[/sblock]

I would guess that PA does not apply to rending.

Round 500: The warden hits with the first claw and bite (worst hitting roll 18) for 36 points of damage. The roc has 171 HP remaining.
The roc tries to squish the warden three times, and is successful all three times (the closest grapple check had a difference of 17), dealing 25 points of damage (the warden can thank DR that he is not dead). The warden has 26 HP remaining.
