Life throws manure at you, can you do anything but smile.

Yesterday I went to buy Unearthed Arcana, wishing for the Wildshaping Ranger. Then I got home, and guess what? I BOUGHT SOME BOOK CALLED "ARCANA UNEARTHED"... Which, as it *also* happened, didn't contain anything interesting at all (IMO).

... (stunned silence)

What kind of dickweed came up with the 'brilliant' idea of throwing around the name of another book just to confuse people?! I want him (or, not likely, her) to suffer from terminal trauma.

Sorry for the outburst, but this really got my fusion reactor going.

To add insult to injury, UA is nowhere to be found. No shop I've been to has it. And I can't exactly buy from the internet (since I'm underage)... Life sucks - and that's news to me (who said that?).

Dude, I know exatly how you feel. There is a perfectly logical explanation for why the titles are so similer, but I know others will tell you.

When you do finaly get Unearthed Arcana, look up the slaughter paladin, great bad guy potential.

Careful. I just read the post of the guy who wrote that book two seconds ago. It's not nice to say things like that to people. tsk tsk tsk

The book does have some great stuff in it...perhaps if you weren't so angry. Put it away...and try it again in a week or so.

Take a peek at the cover of your players and at the cover of your recent purchase--see anything familiar.

All right. Well, hold on. *glanced at cover* no, nothing interesting in it. It's an unnssecary variant IMO. The standard Player's Handbook is better. The only good idea (which I had already come up with a long time ago) is removing the XP penalty for multiclassing.

Wild Gazebo: Let him come. Let him tell me, eye-to-eye, that naming the books like that was a good idea.

Sniff sniff...

Hmmm...

I'd say 7/10 but I have to withhold judgment for a while. The scent isn't 100% clear.

In any event, Tric, welcome to the boards. :)

Well, I suppose that would be WotC, who released a book called "Unearthed Arcana" many months after Monte Cook released "Arcana Unearthed".

So it seems like Wizards of the Coast should be the subject of your ire, but your wishes for them are inappropriate. After all, you could have looked at the book before you purchased it.

However, you may find that the shop you bought AU from will refund you if you return it in pristine condition and ask them very nicely. It is certainly worth a try.

BTW I have Unearthed Arcana but I don't remember a wildshaping ranger variant in it.

Regards,

Page 58. The wildshaping ranger variant takes all of about five lines. Gains wildshape (small and medium animals only) + barbarian's fast movement, loses all combat styles.

I think the original poster would be even more disappointed to have paid for the whole book for just this one little tidbit to find that the whole thing takes up only about 25 words of space.

I have book books and think they're both great and full of ideas. Then again, I'm a glass-half-full kinda guy.

Many months after, or 20 years earlier (I don't feel like looking up the exact year)... whatever. ;) I don't see it as a big issue, but if I did I'd say Monte was a bit silly for naming his book like that when WotC was very likely to rehash the original for 3E.

Page 58, in the list of brief summaries for other possible variants. Gives up the three bonus combat style feats in exchange for a druid's wildshape (restricted to small or medium animals only) and a barbarian's fast movement.

Actually, it would be Monte's fault too, who released a book called "Arcana Unearthed" two decades after TSR and Gary Gygax released "Unearthed Arcana".
