D&D General lightning-themed environment?

Mind of tempest

to mix up where I want to put a big evil wizard doing big evil things I was thinking about a lighting-themed environment as fire or ice has been done to death.
Does anyone know what a lighting environment would look like save a modern power plant, as I am struggling to develop one? other damage themed options are also appreciated

Gnome air-ship(s) caught in the eye of a perpetual storm. Curious about the black clouds they sailed into it and got stuck as all the wind blows them to the center. The party is on a rescue mission. Possibly after several more balloons where sent.

Anyone who falls off you get blown to a random location after 1d4 turns, struck by lightning on the way.

Defeating the wizard will let the storm dissipate, freeing the trapped gnomes. Of maybe its a weather control experience gone wrong. Or a wish spell gone bad.

The Thundering Caves;

  • copper veins acting like wire
  • stalagmite/tites acting like pylons. Ligthning damage arc from them if dealt within 5ft of the formations.
  • Lightning based roppers!
  • every sound is emplified 10x
  • metal armors allow you to stick to walls or be pushed by them
  • You are considered deafened while in certain zones.
  • Have living spells like living-Storm Spheres or living-Shatter
  • IIRC, Ravnica has galvanic golem and other lightning-based creatures.
  • IIRC, Tasha's has rules for magical storms and tempests.

Bluetspur in Ravenloft might be an example to draw from

Maybe you could have the Wizard’s lair be in a place with a strange magical ore deposit or rock formation that absorbs ambient electricity. When anyone deals lighting damage in the vicinity it absorbs some of the damage and stores it until the wizard, who has become attune to the place, releases the stored energy during its Lair Action or as a Legendary Action.

Maybe these electrified rocks can be used as a form of teleportation, the wizard can travel between them.

You could also have the the electrified rocks charge up with electricity, and the wizard can strike the stone with a cantrip or other ability to cause a rock to shatter, dealing Piercing, Lightning, and/or Thunder damage in a radius from where the stone was.

I can see any Blue or Bronze Dragonborn adventurer visiting this lair feeling quite empowered by their surroundings. ;)

I would maybe put two big Tesla Coil style devices in the back of the room that shoot off bolts of lightning each turn. I can't find the link for you because his site is blocked at work, but look up @SlyFlourish 's rules for "Monument's of Power".

This could be a lot of fun. They will give the baddie and/or his minions some sort of buff while they're active, or perhaps regeneration each round until destroyed.

If you play on a grid I'd cut out two pieces of paper. Maybe 3x3, or 5x5 depending on how big you want the area to be. I'd give each monument a turn in combat, and on it's turn, it will bolt it's corresponding square, and then the square will move, to warn the players where it'll strike next turn. This will make the battlefield dynamic and force the players to move around. But also give them options like trying to contain minions in these squares so they get bolted instead. Of course once they break one of the monuments you get rid of one of the squares.

two places that immediately come to mind are FFX's Thunder Plains and Pokemon Black/White's Chargestone Cave, the Plains are a rocky wasteland under a massive perpetual thunderstorm, there are giant lightningrod towers that shelter travellers by drawing in nearby bolts (but only in a small radius), Chargestone on the other hand is a cave full of elecromagnetic crystals floating in the electrical fields that can be pushed around.

you could also play around a bit with a semi-aquatic environment and everything being wet, maybe a swamp filled with creatures that use bio-electricity conducted in the water to assualt unsuspecting prey.
