Like the game, hate the habits

I agree with the general consensus; it's not "nice" to smoke around non-smokers. Admittedly, I'm quite biased; I'm allergic to cigarette smoke - thirty minutes of being right next to someone, and I've got a migraine that'll last multiple days. Even a shorter time can put me out of commission for a while, so I tend to be a bit abrupt with smokers. That said, I, like yourself, feel guilty asking people not to - it's their choice, after all. Luckily, none of the people I play with - nor my friends - smoke with any regularity, so I don't have too much of a problem there. Wish you luck - I think you've resolved to follow the best path and just talk to him, anyway.

burning some incense at the same time will cut down on the bad smell of cigarette smoke also. Plus, incense tends to burn longer than cigarettes and it smells better. Add some candles and turn down the lights and you could have yourself a creepy little area to play in. It worked a few times with my old group.

That said, in my group we have a balcony at my apartment and whenever the smokers want to go smoke and their characters aren't involved they usually go outside to smoke, but when things get heated and everyone is involved, no smoking allowed at all.

Talk to the DM and ask him if there are any other options. IF he is reasonable, he may be able to talk to everyone and ask them if they wouldn't mind. As a DM, he should be able to talk to you without a problem, especially if he is your friend.

This doesn't really help you, I know, but when I game as the DM there is simply no smoking. I know very few people who smoke anyways. The interesting story is with a guy and his girlfriend that gamed with us for a while. They were very polite and smoked out on the porch without needing to be asked. When they came inside, they still reeked of cigarettes. It would hang around in the air all night, even though they didn't smoke inside at all. I guess I'm just sensitive. Now the interesting part of the story is that it turns out that this couple, who both smoke a pack a day at least, do not smoke in their own home either. Not even when their alone. The only smokers I ever knew where it was tolerable to in their home. I'm not sure if I remember rightly, but I don't think they smoked in their car, either.

for all you smokers out there, why the $#%@ did you start smoking in the first place? did you think it would improve your health or your breath, or make you new friends? is it still cool now and do you fit in better with your peers? i will reply to that... it's your own business. but when it intrudes on the freedom of others, it becomes their's as well. don't make decisions for other people, such as making them inhale second hand smoke and smelling the #!%$ anyway. you can fire off firearms whenever you want, just not wherever you want.
unfortunately for the poster, it's not your house. i would take myself away whenever someone lit up (which is what i think they should do when they light up), coming back when they were done. with 10 players, you would probably end up missing action, as inevitably, those that tried to force you to inhale second hand smoke could care less if you missed anything in-game, kind of like those states that force you to add second hand smoke to that nice prime rib you will end up paying for at a restaurant. so find another group, or take some of the non-smoker players with you and form another. 10 people is just too many to game, IMO.

I've got a friend who never smokes in his home or in his car, he will stand out on the porch in the rain before he will light up in his own house. He doesn't like smoking in other people's houses either, even if they say it's ok. He used to not be so sensitive, he used to smoke while taking a shower and he would light up while in a swimming pool, since he got married he only smokes outside, not to mention he doesn't smoke half as much as he used to.

I have heard that candles are good for eating smoke up. I haven't tried this however.

I have. It does work. Mind you, the number of candles you need increases with teh amount of smoke being generated by those darned "coffin nails".

My less respectful half thinks you could just fix it by hauling out photos of smoke-damaged lungs the next time someone lights up at the gaming table. That'll make them stop for a while. And showing a photo doesn't require you to speak, so they can't tell you to shut up :)

I smoke, and I started for two reasons. One, it's a handy way to release some anxiety. Two, it's bad for me. I know it's bad for me and that is why I do it.

Anyways, I don't smoke when I game because I know the host wouldn't appreciate it. I wouldn't smoke even if I was the host because the other players wouldn't appreciate that. I don't need to take time out for smoke breaks, but I wouldn't have a problem with that if somebody felt the need.

This is your first session with these guys. They fill the room with smoke without so much as AT LEAST open a window for the non-smokers. There are 10(!) players in the game, and it sounds like the DM was reluctant to add you. And one of these strangers told you to shut up.

You must have been really jonesin' for a game. Are you sure there are no other games in the area that you can join?
