we have 2 (or is it 4 now!?) players that smoke. people who smoke take smoke breaks durring the game (5 minutes durring our low times), but not durring the game indoors. it hasn't been a problem.

when I was in a ww2 game with 6 players and a DM, the other 5 players smoked, except the DM and I. They smoked outside, since 3 of the players lived in the same house (and the DM), but they had a no smoking rule

I'd be more concerned with the other players thinking they could tell you to shut up.
It was only one guy who was doing it and I got the impression he was used to having that sort of 'pull' (and yes, that has multiple meanings).

And besides, my usual reaction to such things is to tell the person that if they do it again I'll put my fist through the back of their head. I figured that wouldn't be an appropriate thing to say in my first session; I am a civilised person, after all :)

This is your first session with these guys. They fill the room with smoke without so much as AT LEAST open a window for the non-smokers. There are 10(!) players in the game, and it sounds like the DM was reluctant to add you. And one of these strangers told you to shut up.

You must have been really jonesin' for a game. Are you sure there are no other games in the area that you can join?
Sigh, unfortunately that's about the length and breadth of it. If I had any other real options for gaming, I wouldn't even be considering going back. But aside from the smoking, most of the players were alright and even with the slowness that comes with so many players (We should go west! Why? North is where the action is! We should go south! Why? Umm... because nobodies mentioned it yet? {go back to beginning and repeat, over and over and over and over again :D }) it was a fairly enjoyable game.

And I never get to play... in 14 years of playing, I've DM'd lots, heaps, more than my fair share, but I've played all of 8-10 sessions :(

Host's house, host's rules. Doesn't matter if it's smoking, small children, shoes in the house, or fear of the dog (9 year olds are such wusses! (; . Still, I would recommend you at least mention the smoke to your friend, and see if he or she can talk to the host.

Ten players??? You're not all meeting each week, are you? See if you can host a game at your home or another non-smoking place.

Hope it works out.

We have two players sometimes three, out of the group who smoke. We play in one of the guys basement and it is an old house so it uses fireplaces to keep warm. So, so far we have two smokers a fireplace, and then almost every other session two of the other guys will light up a stinky friggin cigar. That is where I draw the line, it makes me sick to my stomach.

Solution, we put a small fan in the room and that helped tremendously, you didn't feel so opressed by the nicotine golem hovering over you. Fan and candles there you go.

OK, no one has posted the obvious solution: pick up a pack of Camels and start smoking!

Just kidding:D

I used to game with a group that smoked and I have handled it a couple of ways. When there was a bunch we took smoke breaks. When there were a couple we had one of those filtering air ashtrays - not really a solution for your situation I know.

I like the idea of offering to host, but with the caveat of no smoking. Nice solution if you can do it.

In my group at the moment we have a 50 / 50 mix of smokers and non-smokers. I host the games and smoke, but my house has a strict no smoking inside rule, so we have smoke breaks out the back for our fix. I enjoy having a smoke break as a GM, both for my nicotine fix and to give me five minutes of quick brainstorming about what comes next in the session.

Ask nicely if the actual gaming area could be non-smoking (or at least better ventilated, it's not as if it would be to cold at this time of year), but respect the answer. As Ced1106 said: "Host's house, host's rules."

Gosh...I can't imagine playing in a game where people smoked, nevermind smoked at the table...

More than the coughing, spluttering and heaving (as I am inclined to do around smokers), it ruins the atmosphere as well.
"You step out into the light of savouring the sweet smell of the air after days trapped in the putrid dungeon below. As the clear air enters your lungs, you *cough, cough* *hack, heave* *splutter*"
