Like the game, hate the habits

Give them some subtle hints first. Like wear a gas mask.

My beef with smoking is that people tend to go outside at the wrong moment. A few breaks during a long session are good; it just seems that these guys have wrong timing.

We all chip in so the group can rent the appartment where we game. The Dm and one player smokes. They go outside and there's not been any arguments.

burning some incense at the same time will cut down on the bad smell of cigarette smoke also. Plus, incense tends to burn longer than cigarettes and it smells better. Add some candles and turn down the lights and you could have yourself a creepy little area to play in. It worked a few times with my old group.

This works if you just don't like the smell of cigarettes, but for some of us, its more than a smell... I work in a job where there are a LOT of offensive odors (dog grooming). There's a lot of annoying, "light the incense" moments. But there are other times where its not a matter of the odor, its the toxic chemicals leaching into my brain... the few times a month where I have to bleach the floors are high on this list. Cigarette smoke is as well. All the scented candles and incense in the world are not going to stop me from feeling miserable in a smoking environment...

That said, a polite request never hurt anyone, but I don't think the group in question is right for this player. Sometimes you just have to accept that. :(

Here's what I would do...

About an hour before the session eat a dozen devilled eggs and drink a 6 (or more) pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

;) problem though - long term smokers have mostly killed their sense of smell. (A friend who recently quit started commenting on the return after a couple of weeks)

I was thinking more along the line of being more afraid to light a match! :D

We have one guy in our group that smokes and he goes outside (it's his house too!) and smokes on the lanai or in his garage and blows smoke out that way. It helps keep the breaks down to one dinner break and everyone else moving along nicely.

At another house i was the only non-smoker and everyone ALWAYS went outside to smoke, no smoking in the house (it yellows the walls ya know). Keeping it all outside gives people the chance to get up and move around instead of sitting in one spot all day. those are the smokers that i like playing with. Chain smokers who puff all day at the table would drive me into a fit..

Sigh, I decided not to join the group.

'Tis a shame because, ultimately, they weren't too bad. I was looking forward to crushing the monk's base in punishment for their abuse of nature (Control Winds and a well timed Call Lightning whilst invisible) and hunting a Nalfeshnee demon is always fun. Even with the roleplaying at a minimum I found the homebrew world and DM's style to my liking.

Most disappointing will be the fact that I reckon I could've made some good friends there. But ultimately, the smoking and the guy who felt it necessary to tell everyone to shut-up (even though he had no problem interrupting everyone else) all the time, made the decision for me.

I've offered to DM a game for anyone who is interested so hopefully a couple of them will take up the offer. Since I'd be the host, they can damn well go outside to smoke :)

Thanks.
