I strongly prefer using the PF2 term ‘ancestry’ and dropping the dated and problematic term ‘race’.

(Note, for 5e, the term ‘ethnicity’ and ‘ethnicities’ might also work.)

I'm considering allowing anyone with shield profiency to add +2 to AC vs a single attack as a reaction. IMHO, sword and board isn'tt good enough to reflect historical dominance.

Adventures in Middle-Earth calls them Cultures. It's currently my favorite replacement for "Race".

Or 'Heritage.'

It's one of those things where you see it and wonder why D&D didn't do it decades ago....

This is the first time I've heard of the word "race" being problematic. It's also used by World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, Warhammer 40k, Star Trek Online, Final Fantasy, and just about every other fantasy game on the market.
