[Note: All of these locations, with the exception of Devil's Head Mountain are within 15 miles of the city in which I live. If I combed the whole state, I could add old forts, mining camps, and other locations to the list.]

Middlesex was the home of the middle (central) saxons, as opposed to Wessex (west saxons), Sussex (south saxons) or Essex (East saxons)

The last two are still english counties, Middlesex is now part of greater london, and Wessex has been split into a few counties

Mind you, in a fantasy setting it could mean something completely different...."Succubus city, capital of Moresex county"
 

I name a lot of towns in my campaign after tiny burgs in Kentucky (Pippa Passes, Marrowbone, Eighty-Eight - we even have a state park called Big Bone Lick :o ). This link has a list of small towns and villages in every state.
