Living Superheroes World (Come join the fun and the debate)

We could also just have it be a singular event that creates the powers, like star dust from a comet actually makes it into the atmosphere, and then from that point on, people can have powers. The numbers of those with powers increasing as the 'star dust' diffuses and remains on earth. It doesn't exactly have to be a recuring thing that comes every X years.

If the PCs start out as some of the first people to get powers, you run into problems, they are already the most powerful, how do you then warp the setting to allow for even more powerful foes that can put up a fight against a whole team of heros? You'd have to make anything that suppoused to be a challenging fight against a Legion of Super Villains.

If you make the heros part of an upsurge of super-powered villains a year or 5 after the powers initially show up, then you have ingrained into the society a need for heros to protect them against the bad guys. The earlier good guys can be few in number, either because some died protecting people, or retired because of injury, or that some of the first wave simply didn't become heros or villians, they just used their powers legalls, for their own gain. Like a super-smart inventor building cybernetic limbs and then patenting them. He isn't fighting the baddies, nor is he one, but his accomplishments still effect the gameworld and allow for non-supers to compete, as well as putting in a different power descriptor(source) into play for heros that want to go that route.

M&M just has mutation has a power source. (Powers that target power sources can then do to many things. A “Comet Kid” that can only drain other Comet Kids would instead be able to drain those bitten by radioactive spiders.)

Very much false, there have always been multiple power sources ever since 1E, Super Science, Mysticism, Mutation, Alien, etc, and people have been quite free to make their own up, I don't exactly know where you got this information Brother Shatterstone

I like the idea of lower powered heroes (Not sure about PL5, but lower than PL10 is probably good start) Isn't one of the things you can do with 2.0 is change the points per PL? So you could have a 100 point PL5 character, and while that will slow down progress on higher powers, it still gives you lots of points to spend. 75 might be better.

While I like giving an idea of a possable origin, I don't like limiting them. I think it should just be an odd phenominon that these things are starting up reciently. Perhaps there is an event that trigered an alternate timeline from earth, so supers began showing up in limited quantities after that (Could be the comet, though I'd like something a bit further back).

As for why there aren't teams, or lots of super villians, well, this super stuff is fairly new, and those who have finaly learned to use their powers are finaly coming out of the closet. Perhaps things have been going on behind the scenes.

Remember, in a living world, the PCs arent always the only heroes, though they will be the major ones usually. No reason they can't run into some guy who's doing what he can in his small farming comunity to help, or perhaps a detective who's a super without knowing it.

I don't know how much interest there will be in such a low powered supers world. To me, supers are well, super. The beauty of the system is that its a point buy system, we can make the Character Creation point be PL 10(150PP) and that is simply the default, if people want to play lower power characters, well, they are free to, they can use as many PP as they want, up to PL 10(150PP). Powerlevel can have as much or as little do with experience as we want. An example from DC comics would be Super Girl, when she gets to earth, she is PL 12-14, she has absolutely no experience, but she is still powerful, or Cyclops for that matter, his blasts have never gotten more powerful, he has simply gotten more experience and improved his tactical thinking, aim, etc.

Naturally we might need some form of minimum PL(Maybe 5-8) just for balance reasons, but this allows people to play their own concept of their characters. You can be a powerful but inexperienced hero, or have weaker powers and vast amounts of experience. I think forcing this to below the default level of power for Mutants and Masterminds will drive away people who would possibly be interested. I think that the Archetype characters from the chapter 1 PDF download are the power level that we should be shooting for here.

My feelings are tht I am not interested in playng low power, and I am most likely not the only one. Why force the whole thing to be low powered when you can simply set up a maximum starting character point, and those who choose to play at a lower power level for whatever reason can do so while those who don't want to don't have to. I think that just saying up front that the games default power level is too high so you cannot play it will lose you players.

What do we need to start?
Players
DMs
Characters
A Location

How important is a mass origin story to people? How about due to all the new technologies/radiation/fastfood resturants/TV/Vibration humanity is just starting to make leaps of evolution, then it would leave it open to plays/DMs to find there own reasons for the piticular powers

Well, let's see. What do we need to start. First, enough support in this thread to justify a few directories (Get Recruiting!!). Second, people willing to organize and maintain such areas (I'm one). Third, Players willing to play (I'm one). Fourth, a rules systems (M&M 2.0 by the looks of it - on sale in 3 weeks).

Location, well, location comes from the ideas for the theme, time, and origins. Not required, but it helps.

Well, put me down for a location monitor, I'm interested. Admittedly there is little available to show for a resume to prove my shtick, but people should feel free to browse my PbP games I'm GMing....

As for recruiting, I'm on it ;)
