If you are referring to the civilian scientists, yes. But the pilots and commanders tend to be from military background (usually Air Force and Navy aviators; not sure if Marine aviators are chosen).

John Glenn was a USMC aviator. There are astronauts with military backgrounds from all the services, including Army (mix of aviators and medical doctors, mostly).

As to the original question, all I have to say is:
