Lone Gamer Experience So Far

For those of you who, like me, have no one to play with and thus play alone, what has been your experience so far?

After playing a bit of the way through the goblin and hobgoblin lairs, I am coming to the realization that the Caves of Chaos are not that interesting when you are the DM and all the Players.

I look forward to when they open up character creation, and then adventure creation. Until then, not sure if I am really interested in playing anymore. Not unless they backtrack and allow people to play PbP.

I mean, if they are concerned about people being in the playtest online who have not signed up, there is a solution to that, going way back to the ancient tradition of the SSI Gold Box games: trivia to identify X word in Y paragraph of Z page.

I'm running a probability file on Excel for my lone gaming experience. I'm looking for things like combat grind.

I have a gaming group, but they've expressed zero interest in D&D Next.

I do not know about anyone else, but I have this kind of odd thing where what really turns me off in lone play is not the length of combat but scope.

I was fighting the goblin patrol on my way back through the Eastern guardpost, when I decided that the last goblin should flee. The party was not able to kill him in the first round (edit: of fleeing), and he was going to alert the Western guardpost. And something about having to add those combatants just bored me. And then I realized that they were supposed to try and get the ogre's co-operation, and enough was enough. That was all more than I wanted to deal with.

I like my combats to be relatively contained. One thing if someone flees, but it is just annoying when you want combat to be over and they summon reinforcements.
