Looking for a good online program

First Post
My group is again on the verge of collapse and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good online role-playing chat style programs. Preferably freeware.

To what End?

If you are looking for simply an environment for roleplay you might consider looking into some MUDs or MUSHs. I would be suprised if there is not one that fits you and or your group out there. Though it might be difficult to find one that uses D20 material.

If you are looking to take your gaming group online, *shrugs* I am not sure as I haven't looked into much.

Some specifics about your wants and needs with such a program would probally be helpful.

I am looking for some way to take the group online. It would be easier to manage a game each week if we could just log on those nights instead of driving from all over the state (which is what happens now).

You might look at options like WebRPG or OpenRPG (no Mac port, yet), in addition to chat interfaces such as IRC or AIM. For a bit more of an investment, you might look at klooge.werks. You could always go overboard and use a videoconferencing solution.

Or, for a different style of play, you might consider a play-by-email game or a message-based game.

Well, webrpg isnt freeware anymore, and the demo only gives you 30 days. That isnt very good for an online campaign. where do I find openrpg?

I need freeware because I am out of work and cant afford to pay anything for what is really just a nonessential hobby. (Gotta pay the bills first, I havent even bought any DnD books for 3 months).

I tried message board games, but with my group that didnt work. Anyone have any good info about setting up a PBEM game (I dont have the slightest clue how to do that.)

Our group currently covers most of the breadth of the Western Hemisphere, so we game on-line all the time. OpenRPG looks good, but we haven't adopted it yet. Primarily we use Yahoo! Messenger for chat, with MS Netmeeting for the mapping, and our own homebrew networked diceroll utility.
