GURPS Lite is a free version of GURPS which you can try here: GURPS Lite

If you find that you enjoy that version, you might consider the full version of the game: GURPS Basic Set

You could probably get by just fine with GURPS Lite. It works exactly the same as regular GURPS; just without throwing so many options at you all at once.

The games mentioned above are good games. It will depend upon what you want in a game--do you want rules lite or crunchy? Do you want something that is more player narrative or GM control? Do you want something that has a grim and gritty feel to it or awesome blend of technology and magic?

What I'd do (aside from trying out the posters' excellent suggestions) is go to RPGNow and put in a search on the various fantasy rpg systems there. Once you've answered the above questions (along with others you may come up with), then you can narrow your search down to a few systems that you can look at their previews or buy their pdfs and check them out. If you really dig the system, then you'll be able to buy the physical rulebooks if you're a collector.

Perhaps a bit belated, but I'd also recommend Fantasy Craft. It's descended from D&D 3.0, but it's very far removed. Other then some terminology and core concepts (classes, saves, levels, roll a d20 and add some modifiers) it's a completely different game. If Pathfinder is D&D 3.75, Fantasy Craft is an alternative 4e. The designers asked similar questions as the 4e ones, but came up with very, very different answers. It's also very well supported in the sense that if you have a question you can get an answer from experienced GMs and the designers on their forums in less then a day and often less then a few hours.

They've released two main source books. The first is Time of High Adventure which collects three adventures and a description of their setting. The second is the Adventure Companion which includes most of the classes they released as PDFs, a pile of new player material, and three campaign settings (Romanesque grim espionage, mezoamerican sword and sorcery, and a high fantasy setting with a strong fairytale feel that one designed described as LotR on the Mississippi). A third, Spellbound, is coming soon which adds piles of spells and specialist casters, and Reality Blurs has put out a series of adventures for it as well.

Well, for the time being, my DMing privilages have been usurped by one of my players who'se been running ShadowRun for a few weeks.
I still haven't come to a final desision, I put forth many options to my players about what they'd like to play next, explaining my (semi)newfound dislike of anything D&Dish. Their responces were half hearted at best, but they did agree that WoD was interesting to them.

They have this fear of new systems that I didn't expect to see from them. So alot of "can't you do Gamma World?" or "What about Pathfinder" questions came up, and I was like "no, thats all D&D, I want something different"

There are alot of games I looked over and would love to try, but alas my players are the ones who chose what to play, not me, so I'm writing a WoD Hunter campaign and hoping for the best.

Alternately, if anyone knows of online groups that might want another guy in them... I'd love to know where to look. I know RPtools has groups, but I have no idea how to join them. I've tried OpenRPG before, and the games there are rarely ran when they are advertised. Any other suggestions (and links if possible) would be apreciated!
