Looking for an abandoned island

You might also try the Dry Tortugas, though I don't think there's much there other than a fort.

Not much at all, but it is a very cool fort.

The whole place has a really rich history. Better than Alcatraz in terms of an unescapable prison.

There are a few other small islands, but most of them are just sandy patches that barely break the surface of the water. The largest has a lighthouse, but it's two miles from the fort. The rest of it is shallow coral reefs.

A great setting for pirates and espionage.

I just thought of the old lurid stories of Roman Emperor Tiberius and his pleasure palaces on the Isle of Capri.

Its not exactly abandoned, but it does evoke the a lot of adventure ideas. Blue Grotto as an ancient holy of the holies. Other parts of the island corrupted by the carnal sins of an ancient ruler. Strategic military significance. Etc.
