More generally, I think that awesome exploration needs to rest on awesome journey mechanics. I find a lot of hexcrawl mechanics a little bit unsatisfying in this regard, mostly because the scale is usually still pretty small when the 6 mile [hex] is the base. I prefer something in a grander scale like TOR or UVG.

5 Torches Deep has a Homesteads supplement on DTRPG which is also centers on investing treasure into buildings and developments in your hometown for xp, and growing them over time. I picked it up out of curiosity ($4 PDF low bar for entry), and it was fiddlier than I was looking for, but then, I didn't really want to make this a central pillar of play. So it might suit others better.
