Looking for some old book titles...

I cant seem to remember the author or book titles for this fantasy series from around the 1980s. What I can remember is that the magic for the books was Birth Luck that if you bound your luck into an item (ring/bracer/necklace/ornamental fan/etc) you could then learn to cast spells. Also the taverns served a stew called PotBoil. That about all I can remember. The novels were a bunch of short stories set in the same world/setting.

Sounds like the Liavek series, which was a group of "shared world" anthologies. (If memory serves, that series is where Alan Moore's "A Hypothetic Lizard" short story came from.)
