looking for suggestions on using AU craft feats.

Hi!

IMC I have decided to start using the Acana Unearthed (not Unearthed Arcana as it really does not have any) craft feats. However, while technically, a wizards staff is really just a big wand when you are using these rules, the staffs in the DMG operate a little differently.

How would you replicate the effects of one of the DMG staffs? They make certain spells always available but are technically charged items. The feats in AU don't really cover how one should deal with these.

Would a magic item that had multiple properties just require different feats?

Also, could you have charges of different spells in "the sticks?" (that is in wands and bigger wands made out of nice quarterstaffs? For example- have a single wand of fireball and sleep?

Any suggestions or help on this would be really appreciated. Thanks!

If you want D&D-style staves in AU, I would recommend one of the following approches:

1. Allow them under Craft Charged Item. I would allow the "multi-function" bit as written, and use a surcharge of maybe +50% to the price to allow the wielder to use his own level and/or stats to determine effect.

2. Create a Craft Greater Charged Item, that mimics the effects of staves. This should have a prerequisite equal to that of Craft Staff (caster level 12 IIRC) as well as Craft Charged Item.

This is the way I would handle it, if the item was to have some charged and some continuous (or per day) properties. You could argue that the retributive strike ability would also require the "craft single use item" feat :)

Wait a sec...

What am I thinking!!!!

You would just make the staff as normal! The appropriate cost (and thus the balanceing factor) is subsumed by the cost for the lesser spells. Thusly if you say wanted to make a "staff of the storm lord" at fifth level using AU feats, the COST of the staff would be:

Lightening bolt (2 charges per) = 375 x 3 x 5 x .5 = 2812.5
Gust of Wind (1 charge per) = 375 x 2 x 5 x .75 = 2812
Grand total: 5624.5

Obviously, since the AU feats change all the level restrictions, I don't see why one could not make lesser staves at 5th level. Its just a way of making a multifunction wand. In fact barring level restrictions I figure just use the recipies in the back of the DMG...

The only real problem then becomes differentiating between a "true" staff and a bigger wand... But it does make the wizards staff somthing important at low levels again, which I like. It keeps with the idea that any charged item has 50 charges but might have several uses.
