Looking for trade/graphic novel recommendations

Hey all,

Looking for some recommendations for comics in trade/graphic novel format.

Much more of a classic superhero fan. More DC than Marvel. Right now I'm leaning toward finding good Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, Batman, Nightwing, etc. books, but I'll take any and all suggestions.

Examples of Favorites:
- Batman: The Long Halloween, Jeph Loeb
- Batman: Haunted Knight, Jeph Loeb
- Superman: Birthright, Mark Waid
- Ultimate Spider-Man, Brian Michael-Bendis
- Superman/Batman series Jeph Loeb
- Green Arrow: Quiver and Sounds of Violence, Kevin Smith
- Green Lantern: Rebirth (picked up No Fear), Geoff Johns
- Teen Titans: A Kid's Game & The Future is Now, Geoff Johns

Lost interest in:
- Ultimate X-Men
- JLA

Didn't care for
- Ultimate Fantastic Four

Thanks.

Well, assuming you aren't interested in Grant Morrisson or Mark Waid's JLA runs (or maybe you already read them- but they are both excellent and worth looking into), Id recommend Grant Morrison's X-men run, the Dark Phoenix storyline, and Geoff Johns Avengers run.

If you're into Nightwing, you'll like the trades of the earlier issues of his title, those written by Chuck Dixon. The first one, iirc, was A Knight In Bludhaven.

Too bad later writers screwed up with him.

For Green Lantern, I recommend GL: Rebirth.

For Flash, the earlier Geoff Johns/Scott Kollins trades, which establish Keystone City as a real character.

For Superman, you'll have to wait until they collect "Up, Up and Away!" and "All-Star Superman" (best Superman stories in a loooooong time).

Just to be different:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original Eastman and Laird version) which was rather dark in tone compared to the kid friendly "Cowabunga!" Era soon after. The first movie was fairly close to original run tho Leo was beatup not Raph and the Shredder was (supposedly) blown up not squished.

Usagi Yojimbo. Yeah he's a bunny but Groo is a wandering barbarian. There's occasional injokes / puns like an unstoppable "demon" named Jei aka Jei-san, Lone Goat and Kid, Zato-Ino the blind swordspig, Usagi's former lord was Lord Mifune, etc.

But if you want to avoid the anthropomorphs, what about Hellboy?

As for DC, I was always fond of Elseworlds series. The Nail is a good read (JLA without Superman) and I definitely liked Kingdom Come.

Been there, done that...try a few oldies but goodies... the sentry and the watchmen

I've been reading Alan Moore's Swamp Thing lately, and if you haven't already read it, I strongly recommend it.

If you like Geoff Johns, you owe it to yourself to read his JSA and The Flash. Easily his best work.

Thanks. I gave up on JLA after Mark Waid's run.

Read and liked A Knight in Bludhaven. Have had trouble finding any of the other trades by Dixon in that series.

Read GL: Rebirth and just picked up No Fear (looking forward to it)

Any particular Flash trades or any of the ones but the two are good?

I've found it tough to find good Superman trades (one of the reasons I was asking for recommendations).

Looking at your list of like, the first things I would recommend are the other Jeph Loeb/Time Sale books:
Batman: Dark Victory (a not as good but still good sequal to Long Halloween)
Superman: For All Seasons
Spider-Man: Blue
Daredevil: Yellow
Hulk: Grey

The lack of good Superman trades is the lack of good Superman comics. "Up, Up and Away" is the best to come it in what, 10 years? (I hated Joe Kelly/Jepho Loeb era)

As for The Flash, by the end of his run Mark Waid got a bit soap-operaish (but do hunt for Born to Run, which details Wally's origin). Of Johns + Kollins, I highly recommend Blood Will Run and Rogues.
