I had thought of a Shaman type character but I want specificly to speak to "sentient races" not animals and such.

I've never seen Necromancy as strictly evil.

When the high archbishop of Pelor nicely agrees to raise your fallen foe, this is not evil. When you enervate the big end-boss this is not usually considered evil. When you animate a skeleton to act as your manservant, this is generally considered selfish. And when you magic jar a peasant and use his body to go on a trouble-free killing-spree, this is undeniably evil.

It is the context wherein Necromancy is used that determines whether or not it is evil.

As for your plight, perhaps he is a 'radical' necromancer who believes that necromancy can be ultimately used to help rather than hurt people. By understanding life and death we can promote the former. He could also be fighting the classic evil necromancer stereotype.

Thant's exactly what I'm looking at...

Thanks for all the help people. I'm working on a Prestige class called the Grey Walker. It will combine Necromancy and astral travel allowing the mage to enter the astral and etherial plains and call on extraplanar aid.
