They also did some pickup scene for FoTR extended while they were there doing TT stuff. The shot in the shire of Sam in his garden was one.

Which is strange, since fewer and fewer people actually pay attention to the Oscars every year.

Didn't Two Towers outgross FotR, even though it picked up less statues?

Fewer and fewer of the second largest TV audience available, yes, but that's not like nobody watched. I think the current world political situation and lack of really compelling films had much more to do with this years lackluster oscars than the show itself.

I'm glad, for example, that Spirited Away won the Best Animated Oscar...a film which might have been ignored by the Academy, otherwise. Suddenly, it's in theaters across the country this past weekend, at theaters that didn't carry it during it's initial run. Hopefully, it'll be gathering a larger audience for Miyazaki's works.

TTT wasn't going to win many oscars, for some simple reasons (All IMHO):
  1. FotR already won quite a few, when it was more novel to the audience.
  2. TTT isn't nearly as compelling a tale as FotR or RotK
  3. Grant the same awards twice, and people will assume it will win the third time out
  4. the TTT movie is less focused than FotR
  5. RotK will probably be viewed as the movie to give awards to, as it has the more satisfying ending to the saga, and viewers are anticipating it much more than they were TTT
