Lost 05/16/07 "Greatest Hits"

Fair enough. Different tastes and all.

I know you're a techie, but not all of us have the motivation, or in my case, money, to afford TiVo. Not that I would bother with it without digital cable, which I don't have either. For that matter, I don't even have regular cable. Still, it's not like I can't afford a VCR. Even with that though, you have to stop and fast-forward.

Sayid! My favorite character from the start. I don't think he needs to be leader. He's a much better kingmaker.

Hmm, my DirecTV guide called it Greatest Hits. Odd.

Sayid so needs to be leader because of that. Jack sucks anyway.

The working title, before they changed it, was Flashes Before My Eyes. Eventually they changed it to Greatest Hits, and I think they actually moved it back in the season to now, from earlier.
wow light, you're pretty far behind. There's nothing techie about dvr and tivo. In about five years it will be the equivalent of having a vcr in your home in the 80s. I think he used the word tivo because it is the vcr for the 21st century, but in that case you could also tape it on a VCR and fast forward through the commercials if they annoy you.

Show's like the shield, the office and 24 I can only watch on Tivo (lets just say prerecorded) because i can't stand the commercial interuptions ruining the flow of the show.

Few shows will go to through the extra and expensive effort of finding a sponsor and trying to show it with few commercials. Considering the bad press of Lost, I doubt that would be a realistic endeavor.

As easy as charlie got into the place, it doesn't seem that difficult to escape from the place either.

He was on his last breath (literally) when he came through the opening. I don't think he could make it to the surface. Remember he also had the rocks to help him sink faster.

Was I the only one who expected to see a shark swim by :D

That was a pretty decent episode. The flashbacks did nothing for me, but I've always been more interested in the island stuff anyways (which I got with this episode).

I finally got to find out where that cable leading into the sea led to - that was bugging me from Season 1! (Though I do remember some bozo on ENWorld telling me that it "probably won't be answered - it's just one of the show's 'mysteries'". Yeah, whatever d00d.) That was very cool. (And I was wondering if the shark might have made an appearance... that was also very cool when they first showed it way back when.)

While Charlie did have a difficult time getting there, I think he does have a *chance* of getting out of his predicament. I hope he does, anyways.

And while I hate anything to do with the Others, I've discovered I do like Alex. It's nice to see what Carl's "fate" was (ie. hiding out in the bushes near the Others). And Rousseau is always good.

Jack sucks, but at least he's got vengeance and blow up Others on his mind - makes him tolerable. (And I still don't trust Juliet and hope she gets killed.)

Also nice to see Bernard and Rose - though I hope nothing bad happens to Bernard. That would suck.

Though I really enjoyed the episode, one thing kept bugging me:

If you want to disable Looking Glass' ability to jam transmissions, why not just cut the power cable lying on the beach?

My first thought was that the women in Looking Glass are former Dharma Initiative. Also interesting is that they are *women*... were they part of the fertility study?

Ahh but then where would the drama be? ;)

Kind of hard to get pregnant if there are only women around. Unless there are going for the who a species will find a way to reproduce thing like they did in Jurasic Park

... or Juliet lied about the station being flooded, hoping the Losties would give up on it. This still could be a power play by Juliet to get rid of Ben (hoping to eliminate his head-hunters). The women on the station may even be loyal to Juliet's cause, or maybe she just wants to maintain the island's hidden status (possibly working with Richard to help the island's "original inhabitants" get control back from Ben).

In any case, I looking forward to the finale!

"But doctor, Bonnie and I keep on having sex, but we never get pregnant! What are we doing wrong?"

"Don't worry, girls. Just keep sending me the videotapes, and eventually I'll figure out how to solve this problem."

They must be Others who Ben has abandoned. I bet we find out that some of the other Others would have wanted to save them is Ben hadn't said the place had been flooded.

My first thought was that they were Dharma, but then I remembered Juliet mentioned that they (the Others) were the ones jamming the radio tower signal from the Looking Glass, so they must be Others, I'm thinking (why would Dharma be blocking signals from the outside world?)

I'd forgotten she mentioned that it was flooded- I was going to say that they probably hadn't been abandoned until Locke blew up the sub (after all, they could have used the sub to travel to the hatch down there whenever they wanted- presumably that was one of its many functions, aside from just transport to the island).

I wonder how the writers will use the ring? Maybe as Claire's poignant moment. Or maybe someone else will get the ring and use it in some way to cause harm down the line.

I'm wondering if they'll even use it at all at this point- they seemed to be really trying to hammer home the notion that Charlie was going to die in this episode, and that seems to have been the dramatic function of his ring, to me- to get the audience to feel sure that he was going to bite it- and then he doesn't.

I was pretty sure he was going to die myself (from some of the promos I'd seen), but when Desmond told him that if he did, then Claire would get rescued, I was like- well, he pretty much can't die, then right? I'm pretty sure no one's going to get rescued for a while yet- the show's got three more years. :)

That's a good point. Is it definitely a power cable, though? (I seem to recall Sayid saying it was, but I'm not sure.)

Something else I wondered- if it's important to have good shooters to detonate the dynamite, then why the heck are Kate and Sawyer going with the group to the radio tower? One or the other (if not both) should be staying to shoot at the Others, rather than leaving Mr. Pheasant hunter Bernard behind.

And the Others are only sending 10 guys? Didn't Sawyer have a big cache of guns? Surely, even with all their losses, the castaways can manage to get a group of people together to fend off 10 armed men? Jack, Desmond, Jin, Sawyer, Kate, Sayid, Charlie, Bernard- together that's 8. Possibly throw in Hurley, and surely there are at least a couple of other able-bodied men in the group that could help out- after all, Jack was supposedly trying to get an army together last season with Ana Lucia's help.

While I very much like the show now, I am really disappointed at how often the writers seem to abandon plans because actors leave the show, or because they haven't planned things enough.

I mean, argh, I was actually having trouble sleeping last night because thoughts kept running through my head about how the show could have been better. Whatever happened to the ominous "We're going to have a Locke problem" from the end of season 1? And what about that army Ana-Lucia was supposed to build? How about the mystery of Libby being in Hurley's mental institution? Oh, and they go through a big broughaha to save Eko, only to have him die in the next episode?!

And seriously, what the f*** was up with killing off Nikki and Paulo?! Apparently the fans didn't like them being introduced? (huh?) Can we please effin' stop killing off characters for no good reason?

They killed off Boone well, I felt. When Shannon died it moved the story forward, and it made you realize that, oh, characters can die before the end of the season. Sure, that's fine, but please don't kill off characters when their backstories are left hanging.

Apparently they were planning to kill Ana-Lucia, which I'm fine with. It was a surprise, and her story had been well wrapped up. I mean, hell, I think Ana-Lucia's death is the only one of the show I do like.

But they killed Libby because they thought the fans wouldn't care enough about Ana-Lucia's death, and they wanted more impact. They killed Eko because the actor's parents died and he wanted to do other things. They killed Nikki and Paulo because ratings were bad and fans online are apparently morons.

I mean, dang it, the best part of this show is finding out about the mysteries of the characters, and seeing their story arcs. It's bloody frustrating.
