Blistering Barnacles!
Farmer Joe – human fighterKane – human fighterGhost –human wizardOrsic – dwarven cleric
The session began with the seriously injured party in the ruins of a small town. A gigantic dead spider lay across the ruins of a destroyed inn, and small fires burned throughout the town. Numerous villagers walked around in a state of shock, some with injuries presumably from the fight. After getting their bearings and receiving some healing from Orsic, the party started checking out the ruined inn and assisting some of the townsfolk.
They were interrupted by a solitary figure approaching their location via the main road into town. The strange and unsettling figure got closer and they were able to make out a filthy human wearing strange lumpy robes and dragging a longsword in the dirt behind him. The man had stringy, greasy hair, long yellow fingernails and smelled disgusting. There was also an odd aura around him that made the party feel ill and uneasy.
Now much closer, they were also able to make out dark eyes with horizontal pupils like a goat, a definite lack of teeth, and no tongue. The figure examined each party member in turn and hissed at them. On edge, the party prepared their weapons and made ready to defend themselves.
Goat man dropped the sword he had been dragging and ripped his cloak off, showing his chest and waist was wrapped with dozens of tiny bottles of green liquid. Hissing evilly at the group he pulled a strap across his chest and there was a huge explosion.
The group awoke with a start at their campsite in the woods near the Triboar Trail. They had stopped for the night and had set up camp and had all had the strange dream. Tasked with escorting a cart of supplies to the frontier town of Phandalin by the Dwarf Gundren Rockseeker, the party broke camp and starting their day on the road.To this point, the group knew Gundren and his human friend Sildar Hallwinter had gone on ahead of them to Phandalin and everyone was going to meet there. The Dwarf had hinted that he & his brothers have discovered ‘something big’ and that the group would have further employment upon reaching the town.
It didn’t take long for trouble to show up. Riding along with the oxcart full of supplies the group came across two dead horses on the trail. Both had been hit by numerous arrows although there were no other bodies. Due to the vantage point of riding on the roof of the cart, Farmer Joe was able to spot a goblin ambush in the trees close to the road near the dead horses. Taking arrow fire from the treeline, the group responded and quickly closed the distance to the goblins and dispatched them.
Examining the horses and the woods the party was able to see a goblin trail leading deeper into the woods. Being hours away from Phandalin, the group decided to deliver the cart and then return in the late afternoon to follow the goblin trail.
Arriving in Phandalin the group recognized the town and the inn from the strange dream they had all shared. Gundren & Sildar were not in town although they had been expected. Back at the goblin trail, the party followed the goblins and were almost immediately attacked by several large groups of goblins and wolves. They were able to hold their own for the most part, although Kane received a nasty critical blow from a goblin. He was immediately healed by Orsic. One of the goblins was able to get away.
The party decided to take a short rest after a series of combats. With the trail climbing higher, the group came across a cave entrance with a stream coming from the cave mouth. Walking in the stream and entering the area the group saw that the main passageway continued uphill, although they did find a natural cavern to the east that showed signed of wolf habitation.
Exploring this passage Farmer Joe found a natural fissure / chimney going up and the party was able to climb it without accident. Entering into a much larger cave the group discovered many more stolen supplies from caravans.
Setting out to explore the area further the group saw in the next area a natural waterfall where two dams had been set up. The party was able to see that the pools set up behind the dams had been cleverly arranged to be traps. The rocks and mud making the dams had wood with chain & rope attached so they could be pulled down quickly, sending a torrent of water down the main passageway. The party had avoided this by sneaking up the natural chimney, therefore bypassing the trapped corridor.
A fierce hobgoblin approached with a injured human prisoner. He demanded the party surrender or he would kill the hostage. The party attacked and destroyed the hobgoblin, but not before he was able to kill his prisoner.
Exploring the caverns the group found evidence that the goblins had used it as base for some time. No goblins or wolves were left however – apparently they had been sent out into the woods to find & destroy the party after the initial failed ambush attempt.
Having cleaned out the caverns, it was too late in the evening to head back to Phandalin so the group decided to stay and set up camp for the night and establish a watch rotation to keep an eye out for stragglers . . .
