Speaking of the near-death thing:
"Not that that was necessarily always what the writers had in mind. The fact is, they hadn't settled on the near-death experience answer until after they began producing the show.
"They had a couple of scenarios. This is the one that they had been living with the longest," Berman said. "When we said to them — 'How does it end? Where were you going to go with it for real?' — this is what they said."

Not exactly the article I was referring to, but it seems to convey they same thoughts, there was no firm idea in place when they started working on the show.

...That's kinda how I feel about Lost. I think it's a good show, I do the research and check the boards, hoping that there is an underlying mystery, but this whole season I feared that there was no real answer. After they said that no one would ever know what the numbers mean, I decided that I was right.

They won't say because they simply don't know. It just seams cool so they keep doing it.
