LotR Risk Boardgame

What about the psychological battle of "get your crazy ally to do something besides pull back his forces and stack 80+ infantry in Moscow"? now that was an interesting game of Axis and Allies. :D

Eh, I and a group of friends at school play all three games (usually risk, sometimes Diplomacy, maybe once or twice A+A) durring our lunch period (RPGs are banned on the grounds because of some Vampire LARPers a few years back). I can say that I like Diplomacy the best, then Risk, and Axis and Allies is soooooo not worth it: way to many rules, takes half an hour to set up, and isn't that fun anyway. The main problem with Risk is that there are no movement limitations. If there were, it would stop that rediculous take-over-Asia-and-NorthAmerica-in-one-turn-because-I-just-played-cards crap.

Yup. thats what I meant about being a Computer RTS without the Computer, the R, or the T. Like with minmaxed, high-level DnD, there comes a time when the mechanics (and the game board) are sufficiently burdensome that its better to have a machine doing them in the background for you.

Must... defend... Axis&Allies.

True, there are problems with setup. I've only played one good, long game of A&A. The best thing to do is set it up at somebody's house and leave it up, and then play it over a few days.

Of course, I tend to try crazy ahistorical gambits to make things interesting. In the "one game", the Germans, played by me, built a factory in South Africa and used it to stave off advancing British hordes (by hordes, I mean maybe 3-4 tanks and infantry).

Ah, well. I should try Diplomacy sometime. It's gotten nothing but positive press.

If you have an 16 or higher in either Int, Wis, or Cha, Diplomacy is the game for you. :D

Seriously, it's awesome. No luck involved, pure strategy, at least, pure strategy aside from the dupe-your-fellow-players-into-blowing-eachother-up-while-you-quitely-collect-supply-centers-from-the-rear. But then, I guess that's a strategy. :)

Really, you should try it some time. I reccomend having at least 5 players, but more is always better. Don't even think about it unless you have 4.

Oh, and Turkey rocks. IMHO, anyways.

I have never heard of Diplomacy. Who makes it?

I was also looking at Settlers of Catan, is it any good, what are its strengths and weaknesses?

I also saw a Civilization board game and wondered if anyone had played it.

Tonight I am playing either Risk 2010 or A&A. I will bring both games and let the others decide (one of the other players has wanted to try A&A, it may be my first A&A game in 7 years.) I can't wait.

Civilization (Avalon Hill)? Awesome game. Not much like the computer games, but the computer games drew some inspiration from the boardgame (resource managment, developing technology, etc). Needs at least 4 players to really cook, though.

I loved this version. If you haven't bought it yet, do so. THG Hal, it is available at Target for sure (way cheaper than Games by James). I can't imagine there won't be an expansion, but I've never heard that confirmed by someone who is in the know. The game is very fun, but I didn't like the end where we were all trying to capture territories and get points. Now, the second time we played, I actually wiped the board, but I think that was due to a rule's blunder.

If you've played, and you've drawn a card that says approximately "draw three territory cards, no one can attack them until your next turn". Do you get to keep those three cards? If so, you get extra armies waaaay fast. It isn't clear on the card, so I'd house rule "no" next time.

After many years of board gaming with a huge ammount of games I have to say that if you Play A&A with the World at War expansion it is a 100 times better.

It makes a lot more sense and adds a lot more options to take out the boredom and add some fun.

What I've seen of the Risk LotR game looks like great fun, as other people have said.

Settlers is also great fun, but much less serious. Any game that features the phrase "We like sheep. Sheep go baaa." in the instructions gets my vote :D
