Love of 3.5E

I like most of the changes in 3.5. I think the game could be improved further, so I am looking forward to 4.0. No, that's not a troll - I really am - not tomorrow necessarily mind you :heh:

It took awhile, but I have now fully embraced 3.5e. I thought I wasn't going to like the weapon sizing rules, but it turns out, they're not so bad. The books are definitely a step up.

I'm also looking forward to 4E. (Also, not tomorrow - but in a few more years!)

To me, 3.5E demonstrated that the designers were paying attention to what worked and what didn't work in 3E. They saw what worked in the classbooks, and what didn't work. They noticed how decisions in the core rules started to fall apart when new options were added to the mix. They saw that certain rules could be confusing.

So they fixed things.

Now, not all of the fixes worked, but they certainly tried.

In 3E, adding to spell DCs was incredibly easy. Too easy, so they fixed that in 3.5E

In 3E, weapon size worked well. Then Savage Species came along, and the rules began to break down in a big way. They fixed the rules in 3.5E - although incompletely. Where are the rules for different size missile weapons? (Personally, I think that anyone who has problems with the new system really should examine the optional rules on page 27 of the DMG).

I see mistakes in 3.5E; but I also am realistic enough to know that in such a complex game, you're not going to get everything perfectly right... and that from their work so far, they'll pay attention when people point out these issues.

Cheers!

It took me nearly a year, but I am starting to accept 3.5. At first I really disliked 3.5, there are a few changes that I hate so much that I still will flat out refuse to play with in any DnD game. I can only think of one rule in 3.0 that I feel the same way (haste). Hence, for a long time I loved 3.0, and hated 3.5.

A few weeks ago I sat down and read every word of the 3.5 SRD, and wrote a house rules sheet. (Before I had only looked at the rule changes mentioned here on the boards.) I then compared it to my old 3.0 house rules sheet. At this point I should note that my house rules sheets only contains fixes and clarifications, not major gameplay altering rules.

my 3.0 House rules sheet was 3 pages long. my 3.5 house rules sheet: 2 pages. Thus I have since adopted 3.5 core books as my primary rules source. I have found there are many minor changes that go almost unnoticed that are for the better. Now I maintain 2 sheets, one for 3.0, and one for 3.5. Both versions have lines that say, "for spell/feat/rule Z, use 3.X rules". So I guess I play a hodge-podge of the two versions, and probably will continue to do so for a long time.

Throw in another lover of 3.5 ;)

Not saying that 3.0 was bad, but when a rules system goes through such a drastic change, there are bound to be some problems. Hell, there are still problems, nothing is ever perfect, but 3.5 cleared up many problems some of the big problems I had with 3.0 (Haste anyone?) and I would heartily recommend 3.5 just for the revised classes and the new and improved combat chapter. Gods, after 3 years, 3.5 showed us how to run combat correctly!

Put me down on the 3.5 side. I think overall it fixed more issues than it broke. I too am looking forward to 4e but I hope is not before 2009 :) I also hope that they can put just as much playtesting into it as they did with 3e.

Definitely a 3.5 convert here. The only quibble I had was with standing up provoking an AoO. But then I realized that you can't trip someone prone.

The only thing I don't like too much about 3.5E is the weapon size rules. They are not bad, but I liked the previous ones better. Everything else is an improvement for me.
