The ball of fire explodes and engulfed two of the horses completed and they screamed in fiery death, dumping their rider's to the ground. The general's horse was still on its feet, fur smoking.

The farther archer got back to his feet and stepped away from his dead mount and nocked a single arrow. He aimed carefully for revenge, despite the wizard hiding behind his companion. The single arrow flew true, but it lacked some of the power from earlier arrows of his companions. It was still deadly enough to fatally wound Heinrich with an arrow deep into his chest.

The red-headed wizard fell to the ground, bleeding and slowly dying from a punctured lung.

"Stand down!" Larissa calls to the horsemen. "There is no more honor to be gained here."

But knowing the horsemen may not be swayed, she turns to Tyrien. "I'll help the others," she tells the archer. "Do not get too far from us."

She darts across the field, sword upraised against the impending charge of the nearest horseman. But when she raises her sword over her head, it is to offer an invocation to her Lady, not a warcry. Warm light suffuses herself and the bleeding Heinrich and Eanos.

Tyrien quickly realized what the General’s plan was. He has selected his best archers because he probably knew she and Eanos were archers. Then he would have charged and impaled whoever stood still with his lance. She thought it was a good thing that he was dead considering how deadly his best archers were.

“Don’t worry about me, I am clearly a better archer than these.”

Still, Tyrien stepped a pace after Larissa and then let fly another volley of arrows at the wounded soldiers to take them out of the fight.

The first pair fired at once hit the soldier on the far left in the chest. Before those hit, she whirled and sent the next at the soldier still on the ground, taking him in the leg. Both of her targets were still moving and able to fight and she sent another arrow after each one. The rider toppled off his horse, dead and the last arrow was fatal to the soldier lying down.

“That really turns the tables don’t it! You guys better quit now!”

The soldiers were not nearly armored enough to withstand your arrows and Tyrien took out two of the soldiers while Heinrich regained consciousness almost immediately after losing it.

"Knew what they signed up for," Eanos says, dismissing further mercy for the soldiers who continued their attack after The General fell. He starts to draw his bow. The whispers surrounding him intensify and his bow glows briefly, then he swears under his breath.

"Getting sloppy, Tyrien," he calls out. "Just stepped into my shot."

As it's the line currently unobstructed, the red-haired archer begins his volley against the northernmost archer, instead. Twinned arrows sink home just below his throat and he crumples to the parade ground in a quickly-growing pool of blood.

With a slight thinning of his lips, Eanos takes a quick step northwest and lets loose three more arrows. The shafts zip past Tyrien close enough that she can hear them cut the air, each managing to find a home in the flesh of the last remaining soldier. The man opens his mouth a moment, his face full of surprise, then he, too, falls with a muffled thud.

The archer stands a moment, blood staining his armor and sweat pouring over him. He turns to the stands, fury in his face. He smiles, though it's a mirthless thing filled with venom.

"Tell me again how you're going to teach me a lesson, Blancher!" Eanos bellows to the cocky singer in the stands.

Blancher cursed and ducked down to get off the reviewing stand. His plan thwarted, he disappeared behind the standing soldiers ringing the parade ground.

The soldiers around the field do not appear to be happy at the abrupt end of the contest. They certainly do not cheer for the victors. But they do not boo either.

The soldier that was announcing the contest to signal the start moved over to the nearest of the fallen men and shook his head. "I guess that is it, they win." Then he walked over to the fallen general.

Larissa eyes the stands, disquieted, but sees no sign of trouble. She watches this Blancher's departure resentfully, but knows the law of the city forbid the justice due one whose pride drove such slaughter.

She slips over to Tyrien. "Watch the crowd," she says, "I will attend to the others."

She makes her way over to Eanos and Heinrich, cleaning and sheathing her sword as she does. She kneels on the blood-stained mud of the field and touches the holy symbol at her neck as she calls down the power of her Lady.

Tyrien drew another pair of arrows to nocked them as she backed towards her comrades in arms. She left the arrows pointing at the ground and dis not draw the bow back. Her eyes scanned the soldiers to see if there were any more threats.

“I don't know what you are talking about, Eanos. Sloppy my ass. We both hit way more than we missed... I never even got to test out my new flying powers either,” she groused with a petulant frown.

“Yeah, that arse Blancher must have been twisting the ol' General's arm to come after us. Who knows what lies that bastard was spreading. We should probably look into finding him in a nice dark alley and turn him into a pin cushion and do Venza a favor.”

Larissa rounds on the wizard, her face a mask of outrage.

"You would take their gear?" she demands in fury. "Loot the bodies of men who fell in honorable combat? This is not the lair of some poisonous beast -- It is a field of honor! And if the General or this Blancher -- whoever he is -- is not worthy of it, I will not follow their example!"

She forces herself to calm. "Take what you will from these men -- I'll not raise a blade to stop you. But I stood beside you for the sake of honor, not treasure."

She turns and strides over to the soldier who had officiated the duel. "Thank you for your service on this field," she offers. "I respectfully request the names of those slain today. I doubt the general will bring their souls back," she adds, eyeing the priest standing beside the fallen general. "I would see that their loved ones are cared for."

Sorry if this complicates RP for anyone else by potentially shaming them into not taking treasure, but here's what I want to do:

Larissa has 7800 gp in-hand. That, combined with her share of the nominal value of the loot for the adventure, is enough to purchase an Extravagant cost of living for 10,000 gp. Here is the rough sequence of events:

1) She obtains the names of the slain, and gives enough of her own gold to the families to cover the balance of the 10k.
2) The gesture earns her sincere respect among the army, particularly given how badly the general has treated his own men by pushing them into a combat in which they were clearly outmatched. And then (presumably) declining to get them raised.
3) Seeking to capitalize on her new popularity, the local Temple of the Sword Saints names Larissa as their new prelate. The job is mostly ceremonial, since the number of worshipers is relatively small and most administrative tasks are handled by the leaders of the cult of each Saint, but it does carry prestige and gives her the right to apartments in the temple.
4) Concurrent with this, the Rornish government decides to try and raise its profile in Venza to curry diplomatic favor. Part of this effort involves a significant grant to expand the temple into something more grandiose.

I'd been toying with the idea of buying the Extravagant lifestyle and going this route in a few levels. This is a bit sooner than I would have liked, but the RP creates too good an opportunity to pass up.
