Arradon has been silently taking in the others' conversation with the spirit when he notices movement at the edges of the candle light. He bends his wrist and his dagger is immediately in hand with a whirring of gears and springs. Years spent stalking others let him know that it is the party who are being stalked this time. "Be alert, we are not alone here." His keen eyes survey the boundary of the light, attempting to catch a glimpse of the unseen visitor.

Zinnelis Laediril, Elven Ranger (Level 1)

Zinnelis was just as surprised as Levanna when Autumn held out the Heart, and even more surprised when the spirit gave it obeisance.

“What city?” the ranger asked. “Who is Tal Agynna? And how do we find the chains and reforge them?”

Zinn caught movement at the edge of the light and he instinctively drew back on the arrow in his bowstring, his keen eyes peering into the darkness for danger at Arradon’s warning.

[section]Autumn Foxfire - Natural Mystic

Entranced by the spirit kneeling in front of her in the heart, Autumn fails to speak but still manages to listen to the others. Perhaps enhanced by the magic in the air, the druid becomes intensely aware of all around her. The sights, the smells, and the sounds of the nighttime cemetery scene.

Before Arradon began speaking, Autumn perks up at the sounds from the edge of the darkness, and her attention is momentarily drawn there. Reflexively, she tucks the Heart away, then a small ball of flame appears in her hand and she holds it up away from the spirit.

Levanna's shock was interrupted by the sudden light. She shielded her eyes with a palm.

"Why must these chains be reforged?" Levanna asked, adding to Zinnelis' questions. At Arradon and the spirit's warnings, Levanna turned away from the ghost scanned the area.

"Litrix di wer hewa", she chanted, gesturing with her staff. Magical energy settled over her form as an armor, then slowly faded from view.

Etan giggles nervously and his small hand clutches at the hem of Levanna's dress where the pixie is hunched, watching everything with wide eyes. He gives the cloth a tug to get Levanna's attention. "Tal Agynna; say it really fast and it sounds like Laguna. The Lady." He looks meaningfully at Autumn and the stone she holds in her possession.

Shadows. All Arradon sees is shadows cast by light and candle, dancing around the perimeter of the clearing. The haze of candle smoke gives the illusion that the shadows are advancing and retreating until Arradon sees a shadow in front of him resolve into a human shape and gain some semblance of solidity.

The spirit of Thane gazes at Zinnelis, one warrior assessing another. "The Unbuilt City," he answers. "The city by the sea." The title is unfamiliar to Zinnelis but it seems to him that Thane refers to Venza. Thane looks about to answer the next questions when something past Zinnelis catches the spirit's attention and he lets out a battle cry and draws his sword. Ready to charge the shadowy threat Thane is pinned into immobility by Levanna's question. He turns to her, eyes blazing, and answers. "Chains break, Chaos rampages like has not been seen in a thousand years."

Autumn sees everything. The rising shadows surrounding the clearing, the heavy smoke of the candle snaking outward, Thane and the shadows deriving substance from that smoke, and the binding that forces the Thane to answer Levanna's questions. The fire burns hot in her hand.

GM: Combat begins! Arradon is up.
PCs lose initiative but Arradon's excellent roll gains him a free round of actions before the shadows.

Arradon seems unusually cautious as he backs away slowly from the shadows. He talks over his shoulder to Thane, asking the most pressing question in his mind. "How do we awaken this Tal Agynna of yours?" He then takes up a defensive posture close to the statue, clearly trying to avoid being surrounded.

At the sight of the undead creature Rak'Tan is struck speechless for a long while. After finally regaining his bearings he backs away a step.
"A g-g-g-ghost g-guys! What d-d-do we d-do?!?" Rak'Tan asks, seemingly terrified.

Arradon's movement seems to precipitate attack by the shadows. They move jerkily forward in stops and starts until they loom ominously over everyone, tall and thin and leaking wisps of shadow-smoke. When the largest shadow-spirit comes within reach of Arradon the rogue's blade flashes out. The creature is not struck but just looms over Arradon not making a retaliatory strike. The other creatures grasp at Rak'tan, Autumn, and Zinnelis with dark claws but only Autumn feels their sting. Their touch is cold and unpleasant.

Thane's mouth moves but he seems unable to answer Arradon's question at the moment.
