At the statue of the ancient king

If not for the lingering threat of the Harran or the shadow of a future encounter with a restless spirit the afternoon spent on the hill above Kingsholm's cemetery would have been idyllic perfection. The weather, as Autumn predicted, was fine: warm, with a breeze stirring the leaves of the trees. Having given up his burden to Autumn, Etan regained that childish, fey humor and chased and was chased by rabbits on the lower hill like some sort of children's game. The lunch packed by the proprietor of the Coronet and Cabbage, cold roast chicken, fresh-baked crusty bread, and a couple of bottles of a pale wine, were delicious and allowed everyone to forget for a moment the recent troubles.

Autumn had plenty of time to read bits of the book on spirits but it seemed that the writer classified every spirit he'd ever heard about as a different type. Without knowing more it was impossible for her to predict what this spirit might be capable of. Levanna had better luck with her borrowed book although she wasn't sure that any of it was relevant. There were numerous tales of Sapo or followers of Sapo battling hostile spirits, like the tale of the Gorram Bull Ioso told in the temple, to make the land safe for the Venzans.

As the sun lowered in the sky and neared dusk Aelspeth grew increasingly fidgety. Darwin seemed to reflect her fear, or perhaps it was the other way round, and the golden-furred monkey crouched downhill and shook. Aelspeth collected her familiar and held it in her arms for a while but eventually she turned to the others. "I'm sorry, but something has Darwin shaken up. He won't settle and I'm afraid I need to get him away from here." Repeating her apologies, Aelspeth turned away and made her way down the hill to Kingsholm proper.

With Aelspeth gone and darkness creeping across the hills the mood became more tense. At dusk a shadow formed in the lee of the ancient statue. It slowly resolved itself into the figure of a man: it's garb was ancient and it bore a heavy sword. When its aged face became clear enough all could see its was without a crown and its features were different than those born by the statue. Clearly this is not the same man. As you watched you could see its mouth moving, speaking, but nothing could be heard.

[sblock=OOC]Due to absence, I'm removing Aelspeth from the adventure. Merry, feel free to contact me when you have more time to participate regularly. I've enjoyed having you in game and hope we can game together again sometime.[/sblock]

Kingsholm/Cemetery

As dusk settled over the cemetery, and the mage headed back to town, Zinnelis rose up to keep watch. As the spectral entity formed, he studied it. A human male in ancient clothing, it wielded a heavy sword. It was speaking, but no sound could be heard.

“Light the candle,” Zinn said quietly, knocking an arrow in his bow but not drawing it yet.

Levanna spent the rest of the day seated on the top of the hill watching Etan play with the rabbits. Smiles flashed across her lips regularly as his antics reminded her of her own time spent with pixies in her childhood years.

"Careful!" Levanna called out, almost motherly, as Etan tripped and took a spill at one point.

*****

When dusk crept in Levanna rose from the ground. With a wave of her hand and a spoken magic word, she expelled the dirt and grass from her robes. She rejoined the others and called for Etan to do the same. She retrieved the candle and her set of flint and steel and prepared the candle for use.

The spectral entity manifesting from the statue at once frightened and intrigued her. Levanna hesitated, studying the visage of the ghost without recognition and with a rising clutch of fear before Zinnelis reminded her of the candle at hand. With a slowly burning twig that Levanna used as a matchstick, she lit the candle.

The candle was short and fat and would probably burn for hours once lit. Levanna held her matchstick to the wick and it spat and hissed but the candle finally took fire and flickered with a fitful light. The candle light caused shadows to dance on the trees surrounding the clearing in defiance of the spells of light cast by Autumn. Heavy smoke snaked from the candle, rolled across the ground in an ever-growing circle and when it touched the spirit the smoke seemed to give the spirit substance. It took a moment for that substance to reach the spirit's throat but when it did a single word croaked forth:

"...blood."

After a moment, the spirit continued: "In the water, blood."

Zinnelis watched the candle sputter and smoke, watching the smoke swirl along the ground to the feet of the spirit, making it more substantial, until they could finally make out the words.

“In the water, blood?” Zinn repeated. “What water?” he asked the spirit. “Who’s blood? Who are you?” This was decidedly out of his element, dealing with spirits and undead.

“How can we help you? How can we give you rest?”

Levanna stepped forward with Zinnelis and Autumn. Apprehension welled up in the pit of her stomach and a chill ran down her spine at the spirit's words. She was grateful to Zinnelis for giving voice to her questions that she was finding difficult to do herself.

The motion of Autumn's movements at the side of her vision drew her attention. Levanna blinked in surprise at the druid.

"A-Autumn. What are you...?" Levanna began, but she made no effort to stop her.

Wind gusted and the candle guttered. It didn't go out but it looked like it might at any moment. The effect on the spirit was obvious: it flickered like a poorly performed shadow-puppet show. The words it spoke in answer to Zinnelis' questions came out as a prolonged rattle. When the wind died, its words strengthened but again, only a fragment were heard.

"...blood of sacrifice. I am Thane of the Great..."

Autumn's presentation of the Heart of the Lady brought a surprising reaction from the spirit. It stepped forward and dropped to one knee in front of the druid. Insubstantial hands formed a chilling cup around Autumn's and the spirit bent forward and pressed lips to the stone like a knight giving obeisance to his liege. She felt power surge in the stone and fill the spirit with a white radiance that lit the clearing in stark relief. The spirit, Thane, stood.

”Blood of sacrifice stains the waters of the great city. Ancient chains weaken and must be reforged. Tal Agynna is lost in the embrace of her sisters and must be awakened.” The spirit looked around the clearing. ”Darkness comes.”

Around the edges of the clearing shadows move…
