Any practical value in making your opponents lawful and/or evil? If they didn't like you before they probably don't like you anymore afterwards.

I guess it could sure inconvenience the paladins and clerics, though...

Don't forget about bards. They cannot further advance as a bard if they become lawful in alignment. Same for some prestige classes. They lose abilities or cannot advance if they enter certain alignments. But- yeah, it could really screw around with paladins and clerics.
