Happily, I've never had to deal with that. I gave one player a bit of a hard time just for chosing Dirk Benedict for a modern horror game. I doubt I'd stick with a group that regularly picked names like that.

We had one guy in our party play the most ridiculous thing I've seen.
Ok the guy's initial character got killed (a diviner specialist). He then brought in a druid/ egoist gnome. OK, that's only fairly bad. I believe this was 2/2. He then added a level of barbarian. By some odd circumstance he then qualified for the king of the forest prestige class which he took.

On balance he was utterly useless in any situation which we found ourselves in.

This is a description of a character that a newbie to our group is playing currently:

Medias the Master Thief. 6'7" human with green hair and Robin-style clothing. operates in an elven city(average elf-height being about just over 5 feet). walks around saying to people "Hi! I'm Medias the Master Thief. *SHHH!* Don't tell anyone!"

He's pulling it off surprisingly well, though. He hasn't been caught yet.
