Lycanthropy

Well, hopefully my players will try to rectify the situation Wednesday by eating belladonna or looking for a cleric to cast the appropriate spells (the session ended mid-adventure, so there is time). If they do so, I avoid a lot of trouble... if not... well.. I am leaning towards only inflicting the NPC Wizard.. although it would certainly be interesting to inflict the paladin.

Your statement should say "usually involves becoming immune." Many disease components mutate constantly. I had Chicken Pox twice as a child, and many other diseases and pathogens have countless varieties that are all grouped together (influenza for instance). I agree with you that it should work however you want your campaign to operate.

True, but the rules don't differentiate between the strains of lycanthropy, it just says lycanthropy, period.

As for diseases, I am aware of all that, including the diseases that were believed to be eradicated but have come back. I am no disease expert, but I do understand a lot of the basics, including disease vectors, the difference between bacteria, viruses, and prions, etc...
