[M&M2e] Red Sands Chronicles

Aeaxeos has had enough of Rasputina's chatter and has by now finished gagging her.

There is a way through nearby but it is heavily patrolled. I was stationed there for a while when working for the guard. I could lead us through, but I convinced them to start randomly rotating patrol routes back then so even I don't know the patrol schedules anymore.

James looked a bit startled when Lord Borroughmeister addressed him. He had been pondering the mess they were in and hadn't really paid much attention.

"Sorry, nothing comes to mind right now.", he said after a few moments of thinking.

"Hmm," Deezy muses. "Never really heard of any 'phantom gates.' Sounds like it's haunted or something. I don't believe in that kind of thing, so I never really paid attention."

OOC: Note, if Seif's rerolls his aid roll what it would do it bump down the frequency of the patrol, so for instance, even though the Aeaxeos's gate was patrolled every hour (when he first learned about it) the aid bonus would effectively cause the reality of that Gate's patrol to be different (ie the Watchmen only claimed to have patrolled it every hour when in reality it was far less.).

It should also be noted that "Mutant Gate's" result was DC 15.

Man, we suck. :)

"You're speaking of a phantom gate. I thought about using them when initially planning this journey; but unfortunately, I only know of one: Mutant Gate. I'm sure you can guess why I would be hesitant on that 'gate'."
He was speaking of crumbled masonry the crawlers could winch over, an unrepaired crack that a thin man and his camel could squeeze through... but that was neither here here nor there.

"The Sardos gate," identifies Seif, who has come through there a number of times. It is not quite what he had hoped for, but it *is* a good idea. His lips twist as he leaps onto his camel, taking off in the lead.

Contrary to expectations though, the desert man still keeps them on the main road for a while yet, making believe they are headed straight for Viking's gate, and in haste too. Then, just before they reach West Mid Street, he suddenly angles the caravan south, to loose themselves in the tinkerers quarter, and then the abandonned sectors behind.

[sblock=Actions]One Hero point used: +5 help anothere reroll 1d20=14. Success. Roll is now 24. If Brian makes his Help Another roll, we will be in the "Patrolled every few days" category!

So, to answer the original questions, Seif is leading them through a rambling path through side roads in very populated followed by progressively unpopulated areas. He has Notice +10 and is in the lead.[/sblock]

OOC: Sorry for the delay, folks. RL blah blah.

Anyway, I can't seem to find aiding on skills in my MM pdf. The only reference I can find is to the Aid action in combat. Brian has the Teamwork feat which gives him an additional +1 on Aid rolls, but so far as I can tell, that's the combat version of the action? I'm not sure it matters in any event, but figured I should get that sorted in my head.

OOC: You just had to make me look it up. :P It's actually +2 (without Teamwork, which Seif has 3 ranks of). However, every ten points you roll above the dc of 10 grants a +1 bonus. so lets see..

Aeaxeos 19 + 4 (Lord B, Teamwork 2) + 2 (Brian) + 5 (Seif, Teamwork 3) = 30

So the gate's patrolled once every few weeks.

On your journey towards Sardos gate you are able to piece together some various pieces of information about the phantom gate. Sardos Gate is located in the South West quadrant of the city-state's Wall, in a section of the city that was abandoned years ago after a fire gutted the region. Since then, the region has fallen into neglect; however, recently Aeaxeos and a group of watchmen were briefly stationed there to disrupt a small band of dissidents who tried to establish own private kingdom from the sector's ashes.

With a weary eye, the caravan snaked its way through the abandoned streets while half expecting an ambush every time the path brought the crawlers between the ruined shell of a warehouse that rested in the shadows of a corroded factory, or between two large darkened seemingly vacant buildings. Luckily, that ambush never occurred since the city's Watchmen were too busy fighting back the chaos erupted after the caravan escaped the road block.

Then, after what seemed like an hour, the caravan reached an area consisting of rows upon rows of burnt-out, decrepit buildings. This was where you finally caught a glance of the Victoria Town's massive walls which easily dwarfed the crawlers the group rode upon. With the wall in clear view, the caravan picked up speed as it headed towards a section of wall that had fallen into ruin and collapsed. You immediately recognized this section as being Sardos Gate.

Many of the buildings that line on the streets leading towards the phantom gate appear to have been purposely collapsed to create a wall of wreckage in a feeble attempt to block vehicular access to the wall's gap. However, the Union's plan was unsuccessful since one of the demolished buildings fell in an unintended direction, necessitating for one of the streets to be blocked off by multiple rows of concrete barriers that were easily shoved aside using the lifters and the metal beast. Once the final barrier was cleared, and the machinery secured, the caravan passed through the gap and vacated the city-state.

CHAPTER III: THE WASTELAND

Beyond the cyclopean walls that enclose the city of Victoria Town stretches the endless Martian wasteland with its icy rust colored sands, its many jagged rocks, and scarce vegetation. Those few members of the caravan who never stepped beyond the city-state's oppressive walls can't help feeling a slight unease as they gaze onto the grim starkness of the planet's landscape; however, paradoxically, the vastness of the barren wasteland is some what liberating.

Almost immediately after crossing the phantom gate, Lord Burroughmeister's voice could be heard on the radio. "Conveyer 1, this is Brother Carter, do you copy?"

"This is Conveyer 1, we can hear you loud and clear." a voice replied.

"Excellent. What is your status?"

"At the moment everything here is Nice, but we see dark clouds on the horizon, so travel with caution."
Conveyor 1 Bluff: 1d20+6=14
Lord Burroughmiester Sense Motive: 1d20+5=7 --> Fail.
Aeaxeos Sense Motive: 1d20+8=18 vs 14 --> Success
Brian Sense Motive: 1d20+0=9 vs 14 --> Fail.
Deezy Sense Motive: 1d20+0=18 vs 14 --> Success
James Sense Motive: 1d20+5=11 vs 14 --> Fail.
Sahid Sense Motive: 1d20+1=5 vs 14 --> Fail.
Seif Sense Motive: 1d20+1=6 vs 14 --> Fail.

Lord Burroughmister chuckled. "Alright if you say so."

[Sblock=For all who Failed.]
"OMG SAND STORM! RUN FOR COVER!"
[/sblock]
[sblock=All who Succeed]
"The caravan is headed to Nice. We spotted several aerial patrols enroute."

Since both Deezy and Aeaxeos have traveled outside of Victoria town you know that Nice is large sink hole and oasis an hour and a half South East of Victoria Town.

"I don't see anything," Brian says worriedly. "I know a sandstorm can jump out of nowhere but ... what am I missing?"
