[M&M2e] Red Sands Chronicles

"I will inquire. Do you have questions?"
OOC: GM Fiat. She's either bluffing really good or telling the truth. In other words, I haven't decided yet. :D

+1 Hero Point For All!

She replies flatly, "Not yet."

Seif reenter's the cab with the Lady Rasputina, then asks the driver,"Status?"

The driver gave Sief a look of disapproval the moment he realized that Lady Rasputina was in the cab. "There was a land slide at the mouth of the canyon, but nothing major."

CHAPTER IV: THE ODYSSEY CRAWLER

Seif Navigation: 1d20+11=30 vs 8 --> Success

The caravan continues on it's route south through the valley for about 45 minutes, as it winds its way up to the summit of a of a large gradated ridge and ontop of a large broad mesa before snaking around the opposite side of the ridge formed by a two mile wide crater.

As you pass the crater you reach what was once the Elysium road. This road is a wide broken asphalt highway that is is a state of disrepair. Elysium road appears to be inaccessible to most wheeled vehicles due to its uneven appearance; however, luckily the dune racers and the crawlers should be able to travel along the path without too much problems.

[sblock=Seif and anyone with a map]
Elysium road runs along the on the western edge of to a half mile wide canyon/fault that forms 15 miles from your current location.

Seif's original route ran east of the of the canyon and in an area that consists of many broad plains before winding through several valleys a broad region of the foothills that lie in the shadow of several craters before entering into a sandy stretch of desert. Sadly although this route is quicker, traveling on it will leave the caravan exposed.

Looking at the map, you know that you follow Elysium road you will be stuck on west side of the canyon (or within it) for two hours, however there appears to be many small rock outcroppings that might provide cover from any aerial patrol that may follow the route.

[sblock=Brian, Deezy, Seif]
As the caravan navigates around the crater's ridge, you gaze down the Elysium Road and notice what appears to be several small shapes moving along the road at a distance between one to two miles away from your current position. The shapes appear to be slow moving, and unfortunately you are unable to tell if they are heading towards or away from the caravan. You are also unable to make out the exact number of shapes since they appear to be in a mass.

No matter what, the caravan will be forced into dealing with whatever you spotted in about one to two minutes if you decide to travel along the Elysium road. However, you *might* be able to bypass the distant shapes if you head along Seif's original route.

"Folks, we may want to avoid this road," Brian pipes up. "Or at least be ready for ... well, I don't know what they are, but there are several somethings moving around out there, and if we follow this road, we'll have to deal with them, no question."

She replies flatly, "Not yet."
Seif's pointed smile was hidden behind the veil: "Too late then."

Seif reenter's the cab with the Lady Rasputina, then asks the driver,"Status?"

The driver gave Sief a look of disapproval the moment he realized that Lady Rasputina was in the cab. "There was a land slide at the mouth of the canyon, but nothing major."
"I will take the lead." The door opened to frigid martian air, and with a whistle, a blur of fur and steam, the desert man was a diminishing figure speeding towards the front of the caravan...

"Folks, we may want to avoid this road," Brian pipes up. "Or at least be ready for ... well, I don't know what they are, but there are several somethings moving around out there, and if we follow this road, we'll have to deal with them, no question."
"Stop the caravan; raise the airship," cracks the voice of their guide over the radio. "I will man the winch. With your permission, lord, we will identify the threat first."

[sblock=OOC]Does anybody want to ride up?

If not, random roll to see who will ride the airship: 1d6=1
1 Aeaxeos
2 Brian
3 Deezy
4 James
5 Sahid
6 Seif Al Mariam

Seif will man the winch, ready to bring it down at the first sign of an arial patrols. [/sblock]

"Stop?" Deezy asked, bemused. "They're not that far off...and if we can see them, they can probably see us. We're a pretty big target."

"Lemme see here, maybe I can get more..."

The 'head' of the Beast, little more than an armored turret for a cluster of sensors, grated as it swiveled to point towards the oncoming...something. Deezy zoomed up as much as she could and squinted at the displays.

(OOC - No Extended on visual, but it does have IR, so could see heat emissions, perhaps...also Radar has a x10 Extended on it, and there's a rangefinder for accurate distance measurements...)

OOC: "Small" does not denote actual size here... in this case "small in terms of relative size to surrounding landscape".

[sblock=Deezy]
Now that the caravan is stopped, your radar actually can be very useful. :P The distance would be at about 1 1/4 mi. Each of the "small objects" seem to be moving towards the direction of the caravan at a speed of about 5mph. However they appear massive, so much so that they could have been easily mistaken to be some kind of structure if they were not moving.
[/sblock]

[sblock=Deezy and Brian]
There are multiple heat signatures that are considerately "brighter" then the surrounding landscape. Bright enough to be engines... however their size is perplexing. (The objects appear to be colossal to awesome in scale)

"Stop?" Deezy asked, bemused. "They're not that far off...and if we can see them, they can probably see us. We're a pretty big target."

"We have height, possibly speed," pointed out Seif. "All we lack is knowledge." And he set about rushing back to prepare the winch and the airship. If Klatta beat him to it, all the better, but he was not waiting around to find out.

[sblock=OOC]Technically, I think all he needs to do is get back to the heavy crawler to activate the airship's Extended Sight X 1000. It's a radius power too, so it works all around should there be other surprises lurking outside the immediately visible...[/sblock]

"Here we go," Deezy chirped as the sensors locked, and readouts began scrolling across her HUD.

"Range, a mile and a quarter. They're moving towards us at about five miles an hour." She paused, then said in a surprised voice, "They're BIG. Huge! Like...building sized, and not small buildings either! I've got heat sources, could be some kind of engine. Too far away to get a clear count..."

"What do you think they could be??"

OOC: Tough call. I'll use "knowledge desert" because it would probably fit under "wastelander knowledge."

[sblock=Seif]
The Transportation Guild is known to opperate many extremely large crawlers (often referred to as mega crawlers). These machines are rarely encounters since they have a tendency to operate in regions that are far from the Twelve Martian city-states. It's rumored that the primary function of a Transportation Guild mega-crawler is to help aid support to the guild's airships and ground-based caravans.

[/sblock]

[sblock=From the Airship]
From the airship's vantage point, the machine appears to be long extremely wide structure (about a 120 feet wide?!?!) which is longer then it is wide and is "I" shaped. The machine's roof has a large centered, red painted circle. This machine is flanked by several crawlers.

Given that Deezy's sensors pick up just as much as Brian's own senses do, he chooses to stay out of confirming her findings. The idea of something that big with an engine, however, has him more than a little nervous. For now, however, he waits to hear what the airship might further uncover.
