M2: The Search for Goblin HQ

(Sense Motive +6 for Ashnar, Negotiator feat be thanked)

"I might take you up on your offer at a later time, but now we have different needs. Who is the leader, the bugbear or the cleric? I think I saw the cleric, but not very clearly - in some kind of armor..." Ashnar keeps the details intentionally vague to see how the dwarf reacts, not quite convinced of his intentions to help.

"Are you setting me free? What brings you around here? You approached from the South did you not? Bog saw you coming. Said you made mincemeat of the ghouls. They were afraid of you." The dwarf smiles, and picks up his hammer again. "They had it coming."

"You're lucky you came when you did. Or perhaps unlucky, depending upon how you look at it. They just sent a major shipment off the other day, so the garrison was depleted. They'll be returning soon, so we'd better get out of here. Especially if you missed Cranzer. He's the leader of this fort. And dangerous."

"Shipment? Sounds like you have a lot to tell us after we find the halfling. Cranzer is the cleric? Where would he go with a captive? I fear we don't have a lot of time." Still not quite sure if he can trust the dwarf, Ashnar looks at his reactions.

"Are you setting me free?"

Nurlan shoots a glance at Tenebrynn and Charlarn, grimacing a little as he says, "Well, you aren't the first prisoner we've rescued from the Jebli." Then, turning directly toward the dwarf, he says, "I do hope you can tell us a little more about your captors." In his mind, he's thinking, best not to mention Jezibel until we figure out if he's really on our side.

Rinaldo, as the businessman he is, sees in the dwarves a great opportunity for his trade, but he also knows that he must be cautious, and try to evaluate the honesty of the dwarf, which doesn't seems obvious at first sight...

"Yes, we will set you free, master smith, if you wish so, but we will not leave right now, we have some business to finish. If you have any information valuable to us that could help us, it would be more than welcome."

Tor frowns impatiently. While he understands that the dwarf may well be an enemy, there seems little to be done about that at the moment, and Irene may need help. In any event, the dwarf has asked for aid and claims to be a prisoner. Any true band of heroes would supply such aid, and deal with the consequences of betrayal when that betrayal occurs.

"We would escort you to safety if we could, sir, but the matter of the halfling may delay our leaving a bit. Do you want to attempt escape on your own, hide here till we return, or acompany us into danger?"

Tor glances at Charlarn for guidance. "Unless we are going to leave now and try to come back for Irene when we are better prepared? If there is a large enemy force coming in behind us, it would be foolish to stay. And there's always the option of setting our own ambush for that returning force. If we capture a lieutenant, we might be able to trade him for Irene."

Sorry, I missed a couple points in my last post. Ashnar and Rinaldo both get a sense that the dwarf is speaking basically truthfully.

"You're looking for a halfling?" asks Thrain. "There's no halfling here. Goblins like their flesh too much to keep them as prisoners for long. There are a couple humans who stay here though. They tend to the gardens and livestock."

"If you're not leaving yet, I'd probably stay with you. It's dangerous out there. There's ghouls about. And other goblins."

"Now, are you saying Cranzer is hiding somewhere with a hostage? He lives in the dungeons, he does. I've been down there, before, but honestly, I prefer the goblins. He's got walking dead down there to serve him. They reek! Worse than those gobbers! And their flesh falls off as they walk! No one else goes down there, except that crazy human woman, and sometimes Bog."

"No. I wouldn't go down there. There's not much point. They just shipped off the treasure. Cranzer's probably got a few trinkets down there, but most he sends off. I swear. I know it's crazy. Who ever heard of a goblin sending off all his captured loot, but there you go. Maybe Cranzer's so into his dead things, he's forgotten about the important things in life. Silver, gold, jewels, gems, he sends 'em all off. Just keeps the wine, food and weapons. Crazy."

"As much as I hate to say it, we'll have to leave then. Irene can handle herself. I swear by the Searcher, she has a knack for getting into trouble. But we're in no shape to fight more goblins and undead.

The cleric thinks, Crazy human woman? He must mean Jezibel.

Tor nods his acceptance of Charlarn's decision.

"Then we can escort you out, sir. If you have anything in easy reach that will help survive a hostile encounter, grab it now. We leave immediately."
