Mages vs Clerics

Is power level most effectively determined by a duel? Some character types are particularly strong or weak against other character types.

I propose a battery of tests for two characters of class level instead (fighting an NPC party of lower level, fighting specific monsters, fighting a horde of low-level goons, accomplishing various goals without necessarily fighting at all, doing all of the above in various environments or with specific limitations, etc.).

I must confess my mad love for the evil wizard and by 20 level i'm a lich good luck finding that pretty little bubble with my soul in it before i come back

That game can be played by two: You're a lich, I'm the Chosen of my god, mageling :p

Plus, as a Lich, you'll be mass healed, and then a close wounds on top of that, and you're down. After that, some communion, or maybe even a miracle, to get the Phylactery. That's that. :]

Alot of people complain about the Cleric and Druid being overpowered.....but how do they stack up against a Mage, in terms of power?
I've played each a lot. For optimization, I will always go for a Wizard (not a sorcerer though).

Wizard - Time Stop
Cleric...dead.

What spells, specifically, are you casting during the Time Stop?

While the time stop is in effect, other creatures are invulnerable to your attacks and spells; you cannot target such creatures with any attack or spell. A spell that affects an area and has a duration longer than the remaining duration of the time stop have their normal effects on other creatures once the time stop ends.

The best offensive use I've found for Time Stop is to spend the rounds summoning big elementals, but maybe I'm missing some trick.

Here's one technique:
1. Scry on opponent
2. Buff
3. Shape change into a choker
4. Cast maximized timestop (using metamagic rod)
5. Teleport in
6. Cast 8 maximized delayed blast fireballs and 4 quickened delayed blast fireballs (using metamagic rods and arch-mage's energy substitution if needed)
7. Contingency-teleport out (or shapechange into a balor or somesuch and stick around to watch the fireworks).

Won't work: His god has told him to expect you, and he'll counter-surprise you! :p
