OK, my PC, a Dwarf fighter, just leveled, hit 8th. Last game we ran into a Bodak, a nasty monster with a nasty gaze death attack. Its a fort save, I rolled a 4, with my +11, i got a 15. I said I rolled a 15. That was the DC. My DM said I failed, so i go down. He later said , after the combat, that the DC was 15. I can get raised, I have the GP, but the level/XP loss is going to kill me. This is the second time I have lost a level. the first time was a legitimate failled save, but this was a DM screw up. I already talked to the DM, He said He will keep dwarf down, as redoing the whole combat would take alot of time. But I loss a level for no reason. Anything I can do? What is the point of going out and adventuring, getting XP when I'm just going to loss the XP? Other players saw me roll and know i rolled and made the save.

A mistake was made. I'd ask that there be no xp penalty when you get raised. As a DM that's what I would do, it doesn't change the outcome of the combat. All it does is not over punish the PC for a simple mistake.

Agreed. Mistakes happen. What you can/should do is to not rib the DM, etc.

What the DM should do is to own up to the mistake and let you come back w/o XP penalty. He can't erase the mistake, but he can do everything in his power to minimize its impact.

I'll make it 3 out of 3. No need to redo the battle. But you should stay your level and get XP as if you hadn't died. It's the only fair way to do it. In fact, I think it's happened more than one with my group, and it's all been fine. But you can't penalize the character for the DM's mistake.

I personally don't think you should even have to be raised and deffinetly not take any kind of penelty.

Suggest that you were knocked unconcsious or even possibly into a coma for a short time, so that you missed the rest of the fight. (don't have to go back and redo fight this way)

This was a DM error plain and simple, you should not pay for his mistake.

But don't be a jerk when you talk to him, try and explain it calmly and the fact that its making it less fun for you, which is generlly why we are all playing.

I don't think I came accross as a jerk when I brought up the issue. I forgot to mention that We are all pretty good friends and I have been gaming with Him off and on for over 10 years. I have no hard feelings, it was a normal mistake. I think he thought you needed to beat the DC instead of meet or beat it.

Considering that being killed by a bodak is a death effect, raise dead won't work on you anyway. It would seem fair to me that the DM arranges a True Resurrection for you. This will prevent the XP loss (which is only fair) and solves the issue of you being raised at all.

Why won't a raise work? Thanks for your advice everyone.

Because a creature killed by a death effect (like the Bodak's gaze) can't be brought back by Raise Dead. You need at least a Resurrection for that. Since he already has to give you Resurrection, he might as well go whole hog and make it True.
