This is an emergency.

An earthquake of 8.9 has just hit out in the ocean, off the coast of northern Japan.
Japan has suffered massive and extensive earthquake damage.

A tsunami 33 feet high has struck the coast of northern Japan, causing mass destruction. The fatality count, and total extent of this destruction, is not yet known.

The tsunami, 33 feet high, is heading outward in all directions across the Pacific.

* * * ALL POINTS IN THE PACIFIC ARE UNDER TSUNAMI WARNINGS OR WATCHES, FROM RUSSIA AND AUSTRALIA, TO NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA. THIS (OBVIOUSLY) INCLUDES HAWAII. * * *

The potential for mass destruction and large numbers of fatalities exists, with this tsunami. Turn on the news immediately. This is an emergency.

Cities on the United States West Coast currently under Tsunami Watches include, but are not limited to:

Seattle.
Portland.
San Francisco.
Oakland.
Los Angeles.
San Diego.

This is the advisory for the coastal Los Angeles area, as of 4:40 A:M eastern standard time, that I received:

-

Statement as of 1:35 AM PST on March 11, 2011

... The tsunami advisory continues in effect for the coastal
areas of California from the California-Mexico border to
point Concepcion California...

Persons in tsunami advisory coastal areas should move out of
the water... off the beach and out of harbors and marinas.

Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing
strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near
water is imminent or expected. Significant widespread inundation
is not expected for areas in an advisory. Tsunamis are a series of
waves potentially dangerous several hours after initial arrival
time. Estimated times of initial wave arrival for selected
sites in the advisory are provided below.

Santa Barbara-CA 0817 PST Mar 11 La Jolla-CA 0841 PST Mar 11
San Pedro-CA 0832 PST Mar 11

For arrival times at additional locations see

... A Tsunami Warning is in effect for the immediate coast and
harbors north of Point Conception...

... A tsunami advisory is in effect for the immediate coast and
harbors south of Point Conception...

Recommended actions...
a tsunami has been generated in the far western Pacific Ocean. A
tsunami greater than 3 feet can be expected for areas north of Point
Conception including Port San Luis and Morro Bay. Persons in
low-lying coastal areas should move inland to higher ground and be
alert to instructions from their local emergency officials. Tsunamis
often arrive as a series of waves which could be dangerous for
several hours after the initial wave arrival.

A tsunami advisory is in effect for coastal areas south of Point
Conception. A tsunami is expected to be less than 3 feet. A tsunami
advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents
or waves dangerous to persons in or near the water as well as boats
moored in harbors is imminent or expected.

If a tsunami was generated... the initial wave arrival would begin
within 30 minutes of the estimated arrival times listed below:

Port San Luis Harbor... at 809 am PST.
Santa Barbara Harbor... at 817 am PST.
Santa Monica Harbor... .at 832 am PST.
San Pedro Harbor... ... .at 832 am PST.

The Tsunami Warning is a result of a large earthquake with a
preliminary magnitude of 8.9 on the Richter scale that occurred at
945 PM PST. The earthquake location was near Japan.

A Tsunami Warning is issued when a potential tsunami with
significant widespread inundation is imminent or expected. Warnings
alert the public that widespread... dangerous coastal flooding
accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for
several hours after of the initial wave. Warnings also alert
emergency management officials to take action for the entire tsunami
hazard zone. Appropriate actions to be taken by local officials may
include the evacuation of low-lying coastal areas and repositioning
of SHIPS to deep waters when there is time to safely do so. Warnings
may be updated... adjusted geographically... downgraded... or canceled.
To provide the earliest possible alert... initial warnings are
normally based only on seismic information.

This product will be updated as new information becomes available.
Stay tuned to your local news source and NOAA Weather Radio for
further developments.

... A Tsunami Watch is in effect for the immediate coast of southern
and central California...

Recommended actions...
a tsunami has been generated in the far western Pacific Ocean... but
at this time it not known how this will impact the California coast.
Persons in low-lying coastal areas should move inland to higher
ground and be alert to instructions from their local emergency
officials. Tsunamis often arrive as a series of waves which could be
dangerous for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

If a tsunami was generated... the initial wave arrival would begin
within 30 minutes of the estimated arrival times listed below:

Port San Luis Harbor... at 809 am PST.
Santa Barbara Harbor... at 817 am PST.
Santa Monica Harbor... .at 832 am PST.
San Pedro Harbor... ... .at 832 am PST.

The Tsunami Watch is a result of a large earthquake with a
preliminary magnitude of 8.9 on the Richter scale that occurred at
945 PM PST. The earthquake location was near honshu Japan.

The latest information from the Tsunami Warning Center was that
although it is still early... the potential exists for a tsunami 3
feet or less in southern and central California. If buoy data does
confirm that a tsunami is likely to reach the beaches and
harbors... the watch will likely be upgraded to a tsunami advisory if
the inundation is expected to remain less than 3 feet. If the
Tsunami Warning Center expects a larger event... then a Tsunami
Warning will be issued.

For a tsunami of less than 3 feet... the greatest potential damage
would be at the local harbors due to strong currents going in and
out for several hours.

A Tsunami Watch is issued to alert emergency management officials
and the public of an event which may later impact the watch area.
The watch area may be upgraded to a warning or advisory... or
cancelled based on updated information and analysis. Therefore...
emergency management officials and the public should prepare to take
action. Watches are normally issued based on seismic information
without confirmation that a destructive tsunami is underway.

This product will be updated as new information becomes available.
Stay tuned to your local news source and NOAA Weather Radio for
further developments.

The tsunami has, apparently, passed by Hawaii, still heading for the North American West Coast, and all other destinations.

Initial reports indicate that the tsunami was not particularly high or powerful in Hawaii, and there was little or no damage.

I hope to heaven, that the tsunami proves to be small, to inflict light to no damage, at all places it strikes.

This is an Emergency. If you are awake, turn to the news immediately.

The tsunami is approaching the US West Coast.
From what I have been able to gather, it is expected to be 3 feet to 7 feet high from Point Conception in California, north to the Oregon-Washington state line.
South of Point Conception to San Diego, it is expected to be under 3 feet.
I have no specific information on the tsunami projections for Washington State northward, or Mexico southward.

Although they are NOT projecting a 20 or 30 foot wave (Japan received a 33 foot wave from this tsunami, but it was close to the 8.9 earthquake that caused the tsunami), even these much lower projections (3 to 7 feet) are expected to cause serious damage and possible serious loss of life, along the US West Coast.

Please turn to the news immediately, and follow the reports, if you live anywhere on the Pacific Coast, anywhere in the Pacific Basin.

When I checked the advisory, they said the Tsunami would have only being about 50 cm (about 20 inches) high in the part of Canada I lived in. And probably less since Vancouver has Vancouver Island in the way.

The advisory basically stated that you shouldn't have been standing on a beach, or you might get knocked down. It was somewhat of a concern since I live about 7 blocks from the beach, in the westside of Van. But also happen to be in the top floor of an apartment building. Which should theoretically be a safe place to be if a big one really did strike here (unless the apartment was badly constructed).

I suspect it was maybe about that high in Washington state directly south of the border.

Was it actually worse in places like California or along the Mexican coast?

It was worse, but in northern california. In fact, it was so bad that some unlucky idiot died as a result of being drug out into the pacific where he either drowned or caught hypothermia.
