Making a Fencer

First Post
I'm playing in a game that is a mix of AD&D 1st/2nd edition, and I'd love to make an Inigo Montoya / D'Artagnan style fencing master, but can't figure out a way to do it. Such a guy would wear light armor, fight with two light blades (longsword/rapier and maybe shotsword or daggar), and rely on dexterity/wits. This doesn't seem to fit with any classes.
If there's any way I could do this with multi-classing or something else, I'd appreciate knowing about it. Thank you.

Find "The complete Thief's Handbook (2nd AD&D) + "The complete FIghter's handobook" (2nd AD&D)

.... and look up for the class "kits" ... there is one called "Swashbuckler"... i think it will do... i'm not sure in which of the two books you'll find it though...

The 2E ranger is about the closest I can think of to what you want. Of course, I haven't played AD&D/2E in ages.

Using the Complete Fighters Handbook, you can use the Swashbuckler fighter kit for its benefits and flavor. Then, use two weapon proficiency slots to be ambidextrous and a Two-Weapon Style specialist (one slot each). Now, you can use two weapons with no penalty. That gets you most of the way there. Finally, ask the DM about using your reaction adjustment (from Dex) as your bonus to hit with your swashbuckler weapons, rather than using Strength. Tell him it better represents the style and theme of the character. If he balks, tell him you're giving up the damage bonus from Str this way, which evens things out. I don't think it's unreasonable...I'd likely allow it, if I were the DM.

As for the "wits" thing, that can and should be handled by the guy holding the sheet. :)

...i believe there is a Swashbuckler kit in Complete Thief's Handbook as well... somehow different...might wanna check out those differences...

...been a long time since i've opened my 2e books...

You're right, and the rogue swashbuckler kit is very similar to the fighter version of the kit. The rogue swashbuckler looks to be pretty good, too, as you get fighter THAC0 with your swashbuckler weapons and a neat disarm ability, among other things. However, I think it's easier to create what the OP is looking for using the fighter kit (2 bonus weapon proficiencies, AC bonus in light armor, rogue proficiences at normal cost, etc). And while either version of the kit will produce a fun Swashbuckler, in my opinion both Inigo Montoya and D'Artagnan seem more like warriors than rogues at their core. :)

mmmmm......

inigo Montoya was an outlaw...

and D'Artagnan begun as a spy of sorts...

......

you keep Indigo and i keep D'Artagnan.. deal??:D

Interesting thoughts on Kits. The fighter is a better choice for what furashgf is looking for. I am the GM in question he is refering to.. LOL

I had forgot all about the duelist though. Hmm.
Last minute research on some things yet.

Been busy week so my time was limited :(
