Making a non melee powerful cleric (core)

If you can use the cloistered cleric variant from the SRD, a Rogue 1/Cloistered Cleric X makes a highly effective skill monkey/trap smith + divine caster double threat.

You'll probably want to be a human to avoid XP penalties.
Halfling. And heading for Shadowbane inquisitor (or the other class). Rocks.

I have a design for a OA Shaman/Specialist Wizard: Necromancer/Mystic Theurge that is pretty fun (a practitioner of Voudoun), and it could just as easily be tweeked to be used for a Cleric/Necro/MT.

One of the first Feats for this PC was Fell Animate. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20041001a)

You knock 'em down with your damage dealing spells...and they come back on your side! If you use a lot of Area Effect spells, you can use Sculpt Spell to help customize who gets hit and who doesn't. This means that you could be generating undead minions behind your opponents' lines.

Heck...Libris Mortis should probably be a starting place to scour for ideas.

A metamagic rod or two wouldn't hurt, either.

Except the OP asked for a powerful cleric build, and mystic theurge is anything but. :D

If you want a necromanctic cleric there are more efficient ways to build them -- although Libris Mortis might not be a bad reference.
